My 70 Charger had a front end collision in its previous life. Mechanic told me it looks like the column has collapsed on the inside and that I should look for another one. This is for a 4 spd, power steering car.

Does anyone rebuild these? If so, for about how much? Whom shall I contact? Price for a used one?

Any help is appreciated!
thanks.

Uhhhh.... could you FIND a rarer part to go bad? 1970 was the last of the 2nd generation Chargers and the first to use a column ignition. Add in the rarity of a 4 speed and your replacement options are pretty slim. A one year column.....Hmmm.
Scott Smith Harms restores many things, maybe he may know. He is a member here.

The column is designed to collapse on the inside, it's a safety feature.. Chrysler use to sell a kit to repair the column.... Basically a rubber glue that would reattach the tube to the shaft.. They are double D parts so rotating motion is transferred but the length can change....

Fact is an ebay search shows....

Just lucky... The fact I had a picture with a part number had no bearing...

Here is an Ebay unit: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mopar-Steering-C...=item2ebbb2118b This is a pretty good price for a restored unit. Maybe the seller will take yours as a core deposit or restore yours?

I neede =d a manual floor shift unit. I have in the car now, complete w/ new harness a PS column shift unit, that will be coming out this weekend. If you are intrested PM me. You'd have to swap out the shifter collar to convert it. I'm only swapping it out because w/ my stage VI heads the header tube hit's the PS cupler.

I just repaired mine. PO took an original manual shaft and compressed it to use on a power gearbox. I put the shaft back to the original length, drilled through the holes in the outer shaft and used nylon screws I but from Valu to keep the shaft in the correct position. the nylon screws perform the same function as the original plastic/nylon material the factory used, the nylon will break in an accident and allow the shaft to compress. the nylon bolts cost me 30 cents each. in the attached pic you can see both the inner and outer shaft. The white marks on the inner are plastic and line up with the holes on the outer shaft. I have more pics if you need any. Shaft is from a 70 superbee manual shift car so should be the same as yours.
