There are two straps that run from the bottom of the trans bellhousing to the center of each side of the motor on a small block auto trans combo. The one on the passenger side is one size fits all, the one on the driver side has two different lengths. was wondering if the longer one is for the 727 trans shorter one for the 904 a friend of mine said i don't need them i think he's wrong !!!!!!! any help would be great , couldn't find anything in the factory service manual on this thanks mike

The parts book doesn't show any difference between the 727 and 904 struts but there are differences over the years and blocks.

The struts are there because more of the bellhousing extends below the small block than the big block; the struts give added support. Lots of folks leave them off but I think it's wise to install them unless they interfere with headers.

This was discussed a short time ago. I believe it was said that the 360 requires the longer strap since the mounting location on the block is a little farther forward.

I had to remove one strap when I added headers to a 360 I had. I think the DS still fit but the PS was in the way. A lot of people throw them away but I'd use them if they don't interfere with anything.

I found on many cars that use the smaller starter the large starter will not clear the support. (not talking about late model mini starter but the Large vs small OEM starters)

Maybe the difference in length is a support for a large starter and a small starter?
