Iv tried putting it into 4wd park netural going down the road under deaccelulration nothen looked under didnt see nothen bent or what is a commen problem that could cause this???? 88 318 tbi if matters

So what/how activates the vacume? Wouldnt there be some kind of switch connected to the tranfer case lever? Any way to bench test? Thanks a million for the help

Also this being vacume operated that wouldnt cause the lever not to move would it cause this lever wont move at all feels like 4 speed thats hung between two gears????

I had a 88 4wd pickup, but I thought you had to push down on the shifter to get it to move back and forth. I could be wrong, been awhile, long while. But I agree, you have to move the shifter before it signals the front axle to lock together. Spray the bejebees out of the linkage, and see if it moves.

What transmission is in it? Auto, put it in neutral and see if you can move the 4wd shifter, if you can, it will grind some, but you will know the shifter is moving the transfer case. Then put the trans back in gear and move it gently and the transfer case shifter should engage. As I recall, it doesn't move far. If it is a manuel, I always had the truck moving just a little, pushed the clutch in and moved the transfer case shifter. Just have to think of it as 2 transmissions and the transfer case has to be in line just right for it to work. Not exactly the case, but that is the best way to look at it.
If you think it went in 4wd, just go under the truck and try to move the front driveshaft. If it won't turn, the transfer case is in gear, but that doesn't mean the front axle has locked together. The other part is that goob of stuff right over the left tube (drivers side), on the front axle. All that is or does is connect the left side axle together. At least I think it does. Think of it as 2 broken parts, and even if one part is fixed the other will prevent it from actually trying to rotate the front wheels.
I gave that truck to my son who has had it now for 10 years, and it is still going strong. 318 TBI, 4 speed, 3.54 gears. I bought it new in 88, best truck I ever owned.

Ok looked on sun viser says to stop put in netural move lever to engage 4x4 tried that and leved did move not a lot but more then before bout 2-3 inches

Which way did you move it? As I recall back to you left it in high range (normal), and pushing it forward put it into low range.
After it moved did a light come on in the dash? That might tell you it was engaging the front axle, but without checking, who knows.

It would only come back no light came on i dont think it was far enuff to engage anything just felt like it was hitting something
yes i tried to move it while backing up nothen
at this point not really concerned if it actualy couples the front end because thats vacume has nothen to do with the lever not moving
