I knew a guy in College who had the two flowmasters underneath...50 series...and then they came UP over the rear diff and into the trunk area and he installed two more Flowmasters in there behind each wheel well and then sent the exhaust down through a 90º bend and out of the rear quarters...
Strangest thing I had ever seen for exhaust routing. I dunno why he did all that...Car was a sleeper but annoying as heck if you were a passenger.
Car was a 66 Chevy Malibu or something

on my old car's big single, I ran a 3" dynomax large body muffler in the stock location, and a 3" glasspack in the tail pipe. quieted it down a little on the outside, really helped with interior drone and resonance from the drivers seat. go for it, I think you'll like the results

I run (4) mufflers. The fronts are Dynomax Super turbos. The rears are Dynomax bullets. Full 3", X-pipe exhaust. Knocks 3 to 5 dec's off and it was worth it to me.
Making 550hp, but I do like to take it out and quite often, and just needed to knock the sound down a little. It has nice smooth sound now, no drone. For cars with full exhausts, I do not believe there is any drawback. It comes down to preference. The car is still mean sounding. I have electronic cut-outs for the track.
Hey, that's my set-up exactly! And the bullets out back really knock down the drone.
Master, again and still
