I have been all over the internet researching soda blasting. It seems everybody's opinion on soda blasting is different, some say It's great, others say avoid like the plague. I'm wondering who has had it done, and how it has held up after a few years. And how had the paint held up?

Been looking at that and wondering too. Seems like a main question is: does it remove body paint and heavy rust or not? Probably not.

But you can experiment on the cheap with a home made setup and see what happens :

From the research that I've done, it removes paint, but only removes light rust.

They say it removes all the nasty stuff...grease, paint, dirt, corrosion....

the issue is that it's baking soda. a strong base.

just as a strong acid is corrosive, so is a strong base. the issues I've heard with it is that after doing the blast, you need to give the surface a "neutralizing wash" with a mild acid, then a water wash to remove all the chemicals.

as long as you get ALL of the soda neutralized/cleaned off, you shouldn't have any issues with paint adhesion or longevity.

I hear that it cleans everything real good. I also hear that the surface needs to be sanded after soda blasting. The surface is to smooth for the paint to adhear.

Ok il chim in i had my shaker hood blasted they told me to wipe it down with vinagar and water 50/50 wipe drip quick then scuff the surface for the paint to stick dont think a self etching primer will get enuff bite to to really stick

Not a very afective way to blast i did the same thing years ago on my hood hinges but with sand just bought a bag and cut hole in the end put hose in it you really need volumn and that setup just wont cut it lol but is ok for tiny lil parts but as he said he used a 3rd of the bucket just doing that lil part for what that cost could took down to local blaster and have done cheaper part that big would be 5 bucks or less) by the time you buy the soda and amount of ele im sure that part was more then 5 bucks

Soda blast will take off paint but will not do anything for rust. Soda blast will not etch glass or real chrome but will destroy imitation chrome. You will need to wash with 50/50 vinager and water then wash with water then be ready to etch and prime. If the surface has flash rust you have removed all the soda.
