Would it help to lower the engine bay temperature (I have non ceramic headers) by permanently removing the inspection covers from the inner fenders? I have to check on tire clearance but I was thinking about fabricating some sort of scoop to shovel some additional air in the engine bay.
car is a 70 Charger btw.

what do you guys think?

That sounds like an interesting idea and I had sort of wondered if leaving them off would have more of a cooling effect on the engine compartment. However, I would be concerned with rocks/debris and mud getting thrown on your motor and the rest of the compartment with those covers off.

If they are like my inspection covers on my '73 Charger, I wouldn't leave them off in a normal driving situation as getting the engine bay dirty to shave a few degrees off the motor is not worth it to me.

Maybe if you did fab some type of scoop to close off most of the inspection holes, that might help but then I'd make sure they had plenty of clearance from the full sweep of the UCA's so you don't smash em when you hit a bump. I'd also wonder how much air the scoop would actually pull as it would be contained in the fender which would keep the air mostly out of it?

it would prob. help a small amount but its also going to shovel in dirt and water.

I could try a backward facing scoop. That way I wouldn't get any dirt/water in my engine bay. Of course it wouldn't shovel air in the engine compartment but it might not matter as the backward facing scoop would provide a way for the hot air to escape when fresh air from the grill area pushes the hot air out.

Although it would look horrible I'm also thinking about some sort of heatshield over my headers to act as an air guide. the fan would push the hot air from the headers out of the engine bay from underneath the car.

or I could just buy ceramic coated headers

heat soak mainly. I do know that there are other options (spacer, heat shield, fuel line routing, vapor separator,...).

I just want a cooler engine bay in general - my hood gets pretty warm after some driving.
