Ok, I am trying to get the bodywork finished on my 68 Charger. The car was originally an auto, partially converted to a stick by the P.O. The one thing I need to install in the frame rail ball stud bracket for the z-bar. What is the location it needs to be? Does anyone have a pic or a measurement? Thanks Tim

I fabricated race cars for years. First, find the factory frame bracket. Check with the common 4 speed vendors such as Passon Performance or Brewer's Performance. They should be able to get you headed in the right direction. They might even be able to provide you with some demensions.

Otherwise, you just have to make sure that the z-bar is square in the car relative to the centerline of the ball studs. Generally speaking, it will be perpendicular to the crankshaft centerline and be square and level as viewed from horizontal and vertical.

Tack it in place and assemble the linkage. Check it for binding. If it's action is clean you're good. If it binds, you missed something. Check to see that the z-bar is installed correctly (not backwards, etc.), you have the correct linkage rods and that you are square.

These linkage set-ups are not high tolerance instruments and they don't have to be =/- .001". they have a bit of "give" in them but if you get it in there square, you should be good.

The car is sitting on a rotissori with no engine, that is why I needed the dimensions. Tim

Great picture Dan , is it safe to assume that the bracket is butted against the flange on the frame rail ?

John-
There is approx 1/8" gap between the rail and bracket. However thats just the rail in the picture. It likely these things were all over the place within reason. Starting in late 70 there was a hole punched in the top plate of the rail to locate the bracket.

Don't forget to also install the clutch peddle reinforcement plate before you paint the firewall.

The factory put two dimples in the fire wall to show were the holes are to be drilled for the studs to pass through.
