The rear band is applied in reverse and in "1" or "L" with a factory valve body. But not in "D". So first gear will work even if the rear band doesn't engage, but reverse won't. With the shifter in "R", the front clutch is engaged, the rear clutch is disengaged, the front band is disengaged and the rear band is engaged.

Air test the rear servo for excessive leakage, and look for rear band to servo linkage issues. You can pull on the rear servo lever by hand and check for proper movement, no binding, etc.

Also check the shifter, shifter linkage, etc.
Last, it could be some valve body issue? Swapping a known good one for a check.

Check the rear servo, if that is not it probally the valve body malfunctions

A little more info on the trans would be helpful.

In some cases, when the valve body is modified, the large check ball is mistakenly omitted...this will cause no Reverse with all forward gears OK.

ok thanks for the input. I just installed a brand new valve body yesterday(3rd new valve body to go in it). I am not really a transmission guy can this test be done with the transmission still in the car or do I have to remove it?

Did this trans ever work? Air test the low/reverse servo, using the case port posted. Also, if the accumulator piston has beeb blocked with a rod, make sure the length doesn't prevent the valve body from seating fully against the case. Beyond this, someone else needs to look at it. Sorry.

Good thing to check. It doesn't take much, and simply removing the blocker rod and trying it will tell you. (valve body R&R required to get at it).

To air test the rear servo,
- remove the valve body
- using 30-60 psi of shop air and a rubber tipped nozzle, pressurized the port shown.
- some fluid will leak, but the servo should actuate and engage the rear band (visual movement).
