What rear end options would a 1970 440x6 coronet r/t have? If there was no track pack option selected? Gear ratio options? Thanks

As mentioned above, it depends on the trans. Here is the dealer data book page.

The STANDARD rear axle & ratio for a '70 Coronet R/T (440 4bbl, 440+6, HEMI) automatic is an 8-3/4" with 3.23:1 gearing & NO sure-grip.

Opting for a "No-Charge" 4-speed manual transmission required the purchase of one of two OPTIONAL axle packages: A33 "Track Pak" (3.54 DANA60) at $142.85 or A34 "Super Track Pack" (4.10 DANA60 & power disc brakes) at $235.65.

All gear ratio OPTIONS besides 3.23:1 were ONLY available in an "axle package".

bblgt, your reply is a more concise and informative than my posting the data book pages for him to read/decipher.

Thanks guys I guess this one is an open 3.23 8 3/4 440x6 car. Wierd Ok, another quick question. Where do I find all the numbers stamped on the body? I know the radiator support. But where would I look for the numbers on the truck lip? Also are the block numbers on the pass side above the oil pan for 70? Thanks again.

So according to that data book page, not only was a sure grip not standard on an auto equipped Coronet R/T, but it was impossible to get a sure grip on an R/T with 3.23s. Is that correct?

I also wondered that when posting. The 70 Charger page shows 3.23 sure grip available. Can't see it being available on a Charger but not a Coronet so I think it may be a mistake/typo.

It may be that you'd need a broadcast sheet to determine whether your 3.23 axle was equipped with SureGrip. My 70 6V Superbee does not have an axle package, but the broadcast sheet has "053" in the axle box. I believe that denotes 3.23 SG.

Sounds like it is just a mistake in that data page as the page also seems to indicate that a 3.55 was not available in an R/T... Sure Grip or not.

Never could quite understand why they would make the 3.23 open rear the "standard" axle. I know it was a way to aqueeze some more money out of the buyer, but many actually wound up being delivered in this fashion. Having driven my share of so eqiuipped cars, its a laughable slip fest-even on bone stockers. All I can think of is how the hell did people drive these cars in snow, or even rain, for that matter back in the old days?.

If it's not clear yet, Sure-Grip was available with 3.23 gears.

Actually, I think it's a way to keep the base price lower.

If it's a 3.23 car it will have a 22" radiator. My 70 Superbee Coupe is a 440+6 with a 3.23 SG.

The numbers for the car are located on the radiator support, to cowl and the drivers side of the trunk lip (under the weatherstripping).

The motor and trans are both stamped on there pads oin the passenger side.

Long about 10-15 years ago i looked at a '69 HEMI RR, it was and automatic with 8 3/4 rear. It was also a 323 open rear!!!! Can you imagine a HEMI with open rear??? I called the guy all the next day to buy it, never got a hold of him when cell phones didn't work so well in buildings. So i go over with cash in hand and someone i know just bought it 5 minutes before i got there!!! That was my LAST chance to own a real HEMI car at a great price(no motor or trans). I'll always kick myself in the rear til the end of my time for that move!!!

I'm the CARETAKER of Weinstats '69 440 'cuda registry and have 104 of the 360 cars to date. 84 fastbacks/20 coupes. Always looking for new(REAL M-code) '69 440 'cudas to add to the registry so drop me a note if any are found or known. This isn't a publicly released registry. Thanks, Dave
