this is the ONLY lifter with this damage...the others are worn, but still shiney and flat... this is the cam from the 318...notice the second lobe is GONE its actually almost perfectly ROUND And amazingly, she still ran good...not great, but good...in an attemp to get this 318 going for another few weeks, I went ahead and threw the 360 cam and lifters in there. HOPEFULLY it lasts a couple more months until I can get the 360 back together.. So my questions is...WHAT caused this?? Lack of lubrication, a weak valve spring, faulty (probably original) lifter?? I KNOW there might be metal particles in the oil. I flushed as much as I could, and luckily there wasn't much on the oil plug magnet. Hopefully she runs great monday on my way to work...yesterday sh didn't want to run hardly and I had to take today off...I can't WAIT for monday

IMO thats not a "WIPED" cam or lifter. That is deterioration of the hardened surface . A "WIPED" cam or lifet is where the lobe or bottom of the lifter is worn to where the surfaces have ground against each other to the point that they are gone...

My kids 83 Ram had 3 lobes that were worn good.One was almost gone.It ran decent but never great.It had 180K on the motor.It was clean inside also.I stuffed another sb in it and fixed that.Rocky

I would be surprised if this motor has 30k on the cruddy rebuild done. It is a stock 318 cam. I'm wondering if when they rebuilt it, if the didn't put the lifters back in the same spot.
On a brighter note, she runs AWESOME now. I must have picked up 100 horse lol. It has some pick up now

there MIGHT be ??
The reason there wasn't alot on the magnet is because it was recycled back into the engine , your oil pump is scored badly , you're lucky it didn't lock up and break it's drive shaft , the pistons below that one got the meatl on it and it's imbedded in the skirt and scored up the walls ...

Don't be so quick with the death sentence. He's lucky, lucky because the wear is so smooth. The resulting particles have got to be very small--extremely small in fact--otherwise the wear would have been coarse.
This is a case where the particles may have done very little damage, and ended up as a paste in the oil filter. I would definately cut open the filter out of curiosity.

I agree. I had a cam wipe a lobe on my 318 many years ago.
Swapped cams, Changed oil and 150K later it's still going strong.

That filter is LONG gone. The filter I took off yesterday had maybe 300 miles on it. I already dumped the oil into the pan, but just may cut it open out of curiosity.
Yeah I wouldn't call it dead quite yet. It reuns AWESOME and if I didn't have to re wire today, I would have fixed the seeping valve cover gasket.
Oh and oil pressure is 75 cold, 40 hot idle. She idles smooth and besides the hesitation, has a LOT more power. I even switched to electronic ignition. More on that later

I had a 70 chevelle station wagon with a 307 I don't remember how many miles it had, I would go to the gas station and the attendant would ask what I need I tell to fill the oil and check the gas hehehe well me and the ex went into town had to stop and put oil in crank the car up and it was running like crap. we made it to mom and dad house went out pulled the vc off and crank the car... ever other rocker would move the other just barely move we drove it home and I pulled the motor..
