Pulled a cam out of my 383 to install a stock cam. Everything looked great except for this one lifter
outside surface. Tha block is good and slick. I have never
seen this in 40 yrs of messing with engines. What you
think? these marks are all the way around and are evenly
spaced like they were made in it. The lifter turned good
in the block and the lobe surface and cam look great.

Looks like the marks from a burr in the lifter bore oil galley area Please let us know what you find

No burr. Lifter bore are good. The marks on the top and
bottom are perfectly lined up with each other. Almost
like it was made that way. A burr would not be a perfect
strait mark. ?? Got me.

Is the lifter covered in chatter marks from grinding?

That's what I was thinking. It was made like that with high spots. They are smooth as glass. Evenly spaced and lined up top to bottom.

now they are

i can't see any way that pattern could be produced in the engine that had to be there when they were installed and may not have been readily noticeable

How much running clearance does the lifter have in the bore? I'm thinking you've got a little more clearance than you need. Mopar did send some blocks out with oversize lifter bores, it's supposed to be stamped on the pad on the front of the motor. Dave

Although it doesn't seem to have caused any problem (yet);
when you catch something like that, it should be replaced after checking for any cause that might need correcting.

Well it fit the lifter bore fine. I checked it in a couple
of others places and it fits the same. Mic the dia of the lifter
and it measures the same as the good ones. Measured the lobe lift
and it was the same as the other lobes .341. Weird!! I owned the car
for 5 yrs and the one I got it from drove it everywhere. Nothing is hurt just weird looking.

i can't see any way running in the engine could produce such a symmetrical pattern but i guess stranger things have happened. a lifter should be turning (to a point) and stroking in the bore which i just can't see producing such well spaced straight marks. i would think there were imperfections when it was made and running it polished the high spots.

I go back to my origional thought,,grinder chatter on the lifter I bet if you were to measure from high to low you wouldn't see .00001 difference in size.

Hi,

did someone figured out what happened there? Have the same problem on only one lifter. Driverside, 3. cylinder exhaust valve.... exact similiar marks on the lifter as shown on his picture.
