I had the same issue w/ mine turned out it was,,,get ready for it.... the ballast! when the idle dropped below 1k it would just shut down. Drove me nutz-o. Check the coil side of the ballast and see what you have.

another possibility is to make sure the end carbs are closed all the way and that the end carbs are adjusted for a proper idle mixture.

And if you are using the thin black base gaskets, get rid of them.

Is this a new problem or is this the 1st start up/set-up?

The engine is just rebuilt with 440 source heads and a 500 inch stroker kit it has a cast iron intake that does not seem to leak but with a smoke test there was smoke coming out of the base plates and throttle shaft

its easy to get a black gasket on backwards. they are marked for direction, and center carb use. i don't have any problems with them but the other ones are idiot proof.

are they old carbs? Maybe they've been "cranked on" too many times. Try and re-snug them but not too much. And if your shaft is leaking I'm guessing that carb will need to come off. Unhook the outboards, start the car run the idle up to 1200, then back it down slowly say 1000 and adjust for best vaccuum. What is your initial and total advance? I'd think 36* total at 2200rpm and 18* initial would be a good place to start.

We had the base plates resurface at the machine shop and now the idle is better at 1100 but every now and then it climbs up a little and goes back down the timing is locked at 38 degrees

Go run the snot out of it and see if it goes away. I know mine will idle up form time to time.

sounds like a lean idle condition. also make sure the throttle shafts in the end carbs are working freely. i've had them bind up a little after the carb was tightened down. why a locked in advance?

We locked the advance to make sure that it was not making the throttle go up and down by advancing and retarding the timing
