I purchased a 2001 Durango with the 4.7 engine new in 2001 and all was well until the engine had a bout 85,000 miles. The oil and filter had been changed every 3000 miles with no oil use age until the oil change at 85,000 miles and the engine had used 3qts in 3000 miles. The engine never has leaked any oil, does not smoke on start up or while driving. My wife drove it 14 miles to work round trip until it had 116,000 miles and I have started driving it everyday for 40 plus miles round trip. There has been no change in the oil consumption since I have been driving it. The engine is not sludged up like some 4.7 can be. Anyone have this problem and was able to correct it?

pcv is the only thing I have heard of, especially if all the plugs look the same. Both my 4.7's were at 150k mi when I sold trucks, and were showing no sign of trouble.

Thanks for the info. I changed the PCV once a year. I did notice right before the 85,000 mile mark there would be a build up of yellowish looking residue in the oil filler neck. I belive this might have something to do with the problem.

The yellowish condensation has been an issue from the get go on the 4.7.(2000). The vehicles that run down the road a good amount really don't have the problem. I believe the factory put that removeable plastic thingy under oil fill cap to combat the problem, but the water is ultra common and is probably not related to your oil usage. There is another 4.7 oil use thread around here recently too.
