Either way you look at it the stamp on the side says its a 1978. Its a low compression engine. And as far as i know theres no real difference between a non hp 78 engine and an hp.

I have to disagree. The HP engine should have a different cam, valve springs , windage tray and double roller timing chain setup. I would imagine the distributor is different to for the different cam timing. Even Motorhome 440's have more to them than standard non HP engines in cars.

But still a low compression shortblock ...

My '77 440hp had the windage tray, double roller chain, hp cam, springs. It also cc'd right at 7.4-1. Dave

I agree with you but how much of that stuff would you reuse anyways. The windage tray yes but the rest of it will probably end up being upgraded or replaced anyways, At least with an high compression one you wouldnt have to do anything with the short block if it checks out ok.

But that's not what the man asked to start with. He wants to know what this engine came out of. I would have to say a police car. Don't know of any other Hi Perf cars in 76 with 440's except them.

*ahem*
Jensen Interceptors!!!

They had HP 440s as standard equipment.

A 440 block is a 440 block is a 440 block.
Doesn't matter where and when it came from, you can make all of them end up the same way.

It would have been installed in a passenger car that was available in 1976 with a 440HP. Without a partial VIN that would point to the plant the car was assembled in that is the only answer anyone can give .

Thanks everyone lot of info so i did some research on the motor,I found that the 440 E HP in 1976 had a double roller chain,hot-pressed valve springs,chrome-flashed exhaust valve hardend tips, windage tray,molybdenum-filled top rings, and speacial connecting rods, and high-strengh rocker arms.could be out of gran fury.

If that makes you feel good, then it's OK. The moly rings will have reduced bore wear, but they'll be replaced. Valvesprings and valves will be replaced with high performance ones. The extras mentioned are for durability. The double roller timing set will also be replaced. The connecting rods that I bought from another 76 HP engine are the usual LY rods, the forging number ends in "535". I bet yours are, too. The windage tray is a nice addition. Heads will be 452, 88-92cc open chamber. The rockers are probably the same as late replacements which were pressed out of slightly thicker stock. It seems that they're all like that now. Exhaust manifolds will be better than the low-perf logs.

All in all, it's not a bad engine from which to start. As in all Chrysler bigblocks, a sonic test of the cylinder walls will tell the most. The B/RB engines have very inconsistant casting quality.

In general, by 1976 Chrysler Corp was in bad shape, trying hard not to go under. They had mostly big cars and big engines and the price of gasoline had soared and availability had become an issue. Times were unsettled. Emissions regulations had strangled almost any vestiges of performance.

Interesting, isn't it, that 36 years later cars are 10 times less polluting and horsepower has at least doubled?

In the '70s the auto manufacturers were way behind the curve and either they didn't want to spend the money or they didn't know how or they hoped by building enough doggy cars they could get the people to scream loud enough to roll back emissions regulations.

R.

EFI, closed loop Computer controlled fuel and timing, etc. Not gonna happen with a carb and distributor.
