Which to use , prices are all over the map ? should I just buy a COMP gear and put it on my hardened MP shaft ? that would be the most economical route ?

I saw a cheap chinese junk Cat for $9.09 ...

Sure, buy a good USA-made gear and reuse your existing shaft if possible.

FWIW, I haven't taken any decent pictures of my 440 Source bronze-gear distributor drive vs. my comparable MP piece, but giving them both a close-up inspection shows the MP piece is simply machined better. The 440 Source piece might hold up as well, but it's definitely a cheaper part from a manufacturing perspective.

One of the differences is the teeth of the two gears are cut differently and I'm suspecting that would result in them meshing differently with the cam gear. Whether that results in different wear characteristics I can only guess about without some type of controlled tests.

does anyone make a melonite drive yet? I know we just put one in a 496 Chevy with a roller. Seems smart since it can be used with most cams.

comp told me 2 years that they were going to make a composite gear for mopars, guess that still hasn't happened. seems mopar people don't get catered to.

It seems like there was a post here not long ago about crane having a new type of gear.

Before you stick it in your engine trial fit your dissy in it, every one I have seen needs to be reworked so the tip if the dissy shaft will fit. Its usually easier to file the dissy shaft than trying to open up the gear. you'll probably need to file a V across the top of the gear as well to clear the 'cheeks' on the tip of the shaft. Hope this helps!

I remember reading about someone dressing the gearteeth on the cam aswell to break the sharp edges?

Using a lock collar on the distributor shaft helped reduce wear on mine pretty significantly.

Has anyone tried cryogenically treating the gear to extend the it's life?

How many street miles are you guys getting out of one of these? Could I use one for a highway cruiser?

My question is how do you keep the gear from rotating while your pressing it on and how do you control the depth (so that the hole in the gear lines up with hole in the shaft so you can get the pin back in?)

I've always bit the bullet and bought the whole assembly from Milodon (and yes it is expensive).

I put a bronze gear on my mp hardened shaft. I just tapped it on and put a roll pin in it. Been on there for a couple years and the gear still looks like the day I put it in.

John.... I'll buy the $9.00 gear for you if you'll put it in your engine and run it. I am sure it will be fine.
I know that RodStRace posted about the Comp composite gears, although I havent seen much on them (for Mopars).
