Hi all! I'm getting ready to install bucket seats with 6 point harnesses in my '74 dart. It originally had a bench seat. I will be racing it at the track so I want it to pass tech with flying colors. What would YOU do? Thanks!

I would but a roll bar in that thing and fasten the back of the seat and the shoulder straps to the bar. I don’t believe that seat will pass tech with out the back of it being secured.

Put in the roll bar.

Without proper anchor points for the belts you have high risk of spinal injury. In a routine hard stop, the harness will do more damage to you and your spine, without proper geometry, than any rollover. A safety device becomes a weapon due to improper installation.

Please do the research with the manufacturers and with back doctors.

A roll bar is better now than a wheelchair in the future.

If you are fast enough to need a 6 point then you also need a roll bar to pass tech.

Yup you need a cage to properly install that cheap plastic seat. You sure you feel safe in that seat?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I was hoping I could get by without installing a roll bar because I would like it to still be fully streetable(if needed it can have passengers in the back to) and still pass tec and race the car. Im hoping the car will run mid 12s at 108ish instead of the high 13s I was doing last year all thanks to a procharger. I really feel comfortable in these bucket seats. Could I possibly use lap belts with that seat for now?

Sure you could , but the question is how bad will you be injured in a crash.

If you are not keen on the rollbar idea then it would be best to install a regular passenger car seat, since you are not concerned with the factory look find something you are comfortable in and go from there .

You can buy a what they call a floor mount kit (as opposed to a roll bar mount) the shoulder straps extend down to the floor!

But, in the case of a frontal collision, the straps will pull down onthe shoulders as the upper body tries to move forward. You could do something like the Shelby Mustangs and use bar mounted straps up at the top. That would be a bit safer. But may not do much for the seat.

Safety is a big concern for me. However I don't like the idea Of a roll cage in the car since its going to be 75% street 25% strip. Could I ditch the plastic bucket seat and get seats from a a100 and do lapbelts and that would pass tech?

According to the 2012 NHRA rule book, which I purchased to ensure I was doing the correct thing, you CAN install a 5 point roll bar, which in turn might be easier for your passengers in the back seat... if you desire to have that option with your car. Lap belts are ok for putting around the street. Get a harness and play it safe if you plan on going to the track. Just my

I don't know anything about drag racing but in the road racing world the are very specific about roll bars/cages and belt placement to prevent spine injuries. I believe you are only allowed 10-15 degrees of belt angle to the seat back. Don't forget you would never want to be locked in to an upright position when the car rolls without the protection of a cage. At least a 3 point belt will allow your body to roll out of the way if the roof collapses.

ou are only going to be running 12's , a milk crate and a rope will probably pass tech ... kidding .

Yes an A 100 seat and your STOCK 3 point belt should be fine , though a high back seat would offer more safety.

Modern ford mustangs have a bolt in aftermarket bar for mounting the shoulder belts. We could sure use a product like that because the orig seat belts are not intended for going fast and not everyone needs a roll cage.

I have built in an E and B body with shoulder belt mounts on the top of the package tray. It's the reinforcement that you don't see overbuilt into the top of the package tray. In the B body I made the shoulder belts removable so if the back seat was needed it could be used. This is not intended to pass any NHRA rules, just to be safer running laps. I hope you all can relate to that.

Real seats are required as well, not the seat depicted in the orig post.

The black seat belt is a 3 pt aftermarket manual adjust style.

After market seats require after market seat belts no matter how fast it is. That seat also needs to be braced some how either on a rollbar or something behind it.

I used to work in a chassis shop. I had no bar in my '66 and asked the owner about mounting a harness. His one question was "why would you want a harness to hold you upright when the roof could come down and crush you if you go over?".

You are safer with a stock seat and lap belt.

I gave up on the '66 when it was going 12.0's at 110 w/o a bar. I was still legal, but somewhere along the line common sense has to kick in.

The plastic seat will not pass tech without a brace from the back to the rear floor anyway.

Get an NHRA rule book. It has very specific instructions for seat/belt mounting. Yes, it's $10 or so, but it is money well spent.

NHRA and IHRA made Y belts illegal quit a few years ago.
