Put in the roll bar. Without proper anchor points for the belts you have high risk of spinal injury. In a routine hard stop, the harness will do more damage to you and your spine, without proper geometry, than any rollover. A safety device becomes a weapon due to improper installation. Please do the research with the manufacturers and with back doctors. A roll bar is better now than a wheelchair in the future.

Could I possibly use lap belts with that seat for now?
Sure you could , but the question is how bad will you be injured in a crash.
If you are not keen on the rollbar idea then it would be best to install a regular passenger car seat, since you are not concerned with the factory look find something you are comfortable in and go from there .

But, in the case of a frontal collision, the straps will pull down onthe shoulders as the upper body tries to move forward. You could do something like the Shelby Mustangs and use bar mounted straps up at the top. That would be a bit safer. But may not do much for the seat.

I was hoping I could get by without installing a roll bar because I would like it to still be fully streetable(if needed it can have passengers in the back to) and still pass tec and race the car.
According to the 2012 NHRA rule book, which I purchased to ensure I was doing the correct thing, you CAN install a 5 point roll bar, which in turn might be easier for your passengers in the back seat... if you desire to have that option with your car. Lap belts are ok for putting around the street. Get a harness and play it safe if you plan on going to the track. Just my

I don't know anything about drag racing but in the road racing world the are very specific about roll bars/cages and belt placement to prevent spine injuries. I believe you are only allowed 10-15 degrees of belt angle to the seat back. Don't forget you would never want to be locked in to an upright position when the car rolls without the protection of a cage. At least a 3 point belt will allow your body to roll out of the way if the roof collapses.

Safety is a big concern for me. However I don't like the idea Of a roll cage in the car since its going to be 75% street 25% strip. Could I ditch the plastic bucket seat and get seats from a a100 and do lapbelts and that would pass tech?
ou are only going to be running 12's , a milk crate and a rope will probably pass tech ... kidding .
Yes an A 100 seat and your STOCK 3 point belt should be fine , though a high back seat would offer more safety.

I used to work in a chassis shop. I had no bar in my '66 and asked the owner about mounting a harness. His one question was "why would you want a harness to hold you upright when the roof could come down and crush you if you go over?".
You are safer with a stock seat and lap belt.
I gave up on the '66 when it was going 12.0's at 110 w/o a bar. I was still legal, but somewhere along the line common sense has to kick in.
The plastic seat will not pass tech without a brace from the back to the rear floor anyway.
Get an NHRA rule book. It has very specific instructions for seat/belt mounting. Yes, it's $10 or so, but it is money well spent.

NHRA and IHRA made Y belts illegal quit a few years ago.
