Since I was off today I decided to try out the '76 thermoquad I bought off ebay. I got lazy and just installed it, because it looked so clean and untouched. Motor started up fairly quickly but then I peered thru the hood opening and saw fuel gushing out of the bowl vent tube! I shut it down and cleaned up the gas mess. I guess that means the float is saturated and sunk to the bottom, or the level needs adjusting? Anything else that could have caused it?

Remove the top for a look.

Could be the needle & seat are shot.
Could be a stuck float.
Could be a bad float.
Could be parts are missing.

Don't forget there are two screws inside the choke airhorn.

There are 2 O-rings between the plastic bowl and cover. If they're shrunk the bowl will overflow.

replace the needle/seat assy's and adj float levels. Might be able to wipe the needle neoprene tapered tip with your thumb to clean/smooth it. blow the 2 seats clean check the brass seats for snugged then install the 2 rubbed clean needles then the float assy's.

Actually it won't overflow because of those... It will run crazy rich but not overflow... That has to be an issue with the needles & seats or floats... I never trust an old carb till I've looked inside...

Yep, best "Blind guess" is a stuck float/needle/seat issue.

Thanks for the advice. I have heard about the O ring problems with these carbs. Unfortunately I have to wait till next week before I'll have time to tear it apart...

You're correct brain dead on my part. I was just thinking rich.

Would it come out the top?

NAPA sells brass floats.
