I am getting 16 new Hydraulic lifters in today. Along with break in oil and Cam/Lifter Lube.

This is the first time working inside my engine so if I could get some intructions... I have some books to go by but they are using an 5.9 magnum as there example.

Also what is the recommendation on pre soaking the lifters in oil.
Do I follow the same break in procedure as breaking in a new cam?
Thanks for your help Moparts

Mose cam & lifter suppliers don't recommend pre-soaking the lifters any more. Put a good cam lube on the bases of the lifter and light oil on the lifter sides (not cam lube). If the engine has been run and you are just replacing the lifters (for what ever reason) install and reassemble and fire the engine the lifters should pump on there own.

OK. Thanks. Your supposed to return each pushrod to the same spot, correct?

I wouldn't worry about where the push rods go.

...i have heard you can change the lifters without removing the intake
but have no first hand experience.

I just did it on my 318 without removing the intake. It is tricky to do on the rear cylinders where there's stuff blocking your view but you can do it. I used that $8 expanding-tang tool that grabs the inner lip of the lifter.

But I used a magnetic retriever.

I HIGHLY recomend soaking th lifters at least overnite before installation. Lifters without any oil in them can make for hard starting and very slow rpm after it starts, Exactly wat you dont want.

Wonder what the reason is for not soaking them? I always have...not saying it's right?

When you preoil the eng w your drill it'll take care of the lifter internals. I would mockup/check the lifters in their bores: clean lifters/bore w brake kleen and mockup lifters w WD40 in their bore then raise each one up off of its' lobe w your finger & release it & the lifter should fall back onto its' lobe w a resounding "thunk" & if not it's too tight & need honed. This is the #1 caveat to prevent cam lifter breakin failure. The lifters MUST be free to rotate. W all the reported cam failures nowadays nothing can be left to chance. Also black Moly paste on lobes/lifter BOTTOMS only. High zinc oil for the life of the eng. Want eng to light off immediately PROPER PREP

OK so I pulled the rocker arms off and got to the push rods and I found a huge problem a bent pushrod with really bad wear across the side and then the pushrod that goes with this one has a ring wore around the upper half and so does one on the passenger side... what in the hell caused this? I will attach pics when my photobucket stops l;ocking me out for failing to remember my password

I never soaked any of my lifters and I never had a problem. Just cam lube on the bottom and light oil on the sides and push rod hole. I guess dipping them in oil and soaking wouldn`t hurt but I never bothered with it but I`m far from a expert for sure. Also any time you install new lifters you need to break them in unless they are rollers.

Soaked mine in, and since the engine was on the stand I took quite some time to set these up. These were the Sealed Power/Speed Pro anti-pump up lifters, so with adjustable rockers I had set them (per instructions) to just take up any clearance but NOT to actually depress the lifter plunger. Easy way to do this was to rotate the pushrod in one hand while tightenning the rocker adjuster screw with the other. Once the slack in the pushrod rotation was gone, the job was done.
