My dad just switched from the turbo action reverse manual valve body to the turbo action transbrake valve body. When he first put it in he noticed an overlap in the 1-2 shift with the wheels off the ground. He went back and checked all the clearances and readjusted the bands and did not notice the overlap anymore. He went out last night and made a 4 passes. The first pass he said the car felt like it was laboring and all the passes were between 10.51-10.56. The last time out before the valve body swap, the car ran 10.24-10.26. I did not drive the car last night, so I can't say for sure how it felt. With the valve body swap he had to drill the front drum and rear clutch piston. Is there any problems switching back to the non transbrake valve body with the internal mods? What would you look for to adress the overlap with the transbrake valve body?
Y ou will have what appears to be an overlap if done on the stand's, even the instruction's mention this, make sure your low/reverse band is adjusted properly, you may have to loosen it up approx 1/4 turn on the adjuster, this will change the shift timing a slight amount, are you racing pro tree then that is where you drill a relief hole in the high gear drum, regular bracket tree you do not.

The drum is drilled, as he will be running some index races. The band adjustment was per the instructions.
My main question is will the drilled drum effect the operation if we switch back to the non transbrake valve body? He is planning on racing this weekend and was wanting to change out valve bodies.
I think before you swap VB's I would loosen the low/reverse band 1/4 turn, I had one once that did just as you describe and found the adjustment was just a tad too tight so I backed it off and that fixed it, as far as the high gear drum, I did the same thing to mine and ended up plugging the hole in the drum, my thing is why make a leak there when you are trying to get as much pressure as you can on the clutch's, low pressure will allow them to slip and then the next thing they are toast as far as the hole in the direct clutch piston, that one has me baffeled, so i will have to look at my instructions about that, don't remember anything about that one.

check your linkage adjusment. When thats off, the trans will not shift clean into the next gear, and will make the trans drag. Its very imporant to have the adjustment right.

The transbrake VB might be set up to run a much higher line pressure than the regular RMVB, since the drilled drums are essentially wide open leaks the lower pressure VB might not like those leaks.
IMHO, jack stands are the absolute worst place to judge a transmission's shift quality.
