I know it probably depends on the gun you are using but any rule of thumb on spray volume, density? Distance from the car being painted? 8"? 12"? ????

Like you said depends on the gun and sometimes even the paint your spraying. I would spray some cover paper and keep adjusting until your spray fan is even

Yep Depends, kinda like writing your name.
Depends if you are using a big chunk of chalk on asphault or a ballpoint on paper.

Everything in the equation affects the other things.
Rough basic distance is 8-10" away. Some can spray closer/faster. when doing metallic base coats, you probably want to pull back and 'fog' the final coat so it lays out even.

I don't know why you adjust the volume down. Get a good pattern at WOT and adjust your distance and speed to lay it down.

A little more info would be helpful. What type of gun standard or HVLP? What type of paint solid or metallic? Base coat/clear coat or acrylic? Are you doing a spot, panel, overall paint job? All these factor in to what your asking.

Good info. Thanks. I have painted before but it has been years. Going to paint my satellite. Base coat clear coat. Black , as shiny and glossy as possible. Is there a thread om the basics avaiable? Air volume & such? Thanks!

Start with the local pro paint shop. Stuff that someone says works in Seattle (wet, cool, sea level) probably isn't the best here (dry, hot in the summer, 4600').
Follow the spec sheets that come with the materials.
Do test panels!!!
Try different techniques on each panel so you know what is the best for your style.

Since you said Black with clear, block the whole thing one more time!

Make sure to lay on enough clear to cut and buff after!

There are a ton of videos on you tube from everyone from the manufacturers to Larry's other brother Darryl.
There are sites and forums for body/paint.
Thing is, there are so many different ways to get the end result that it can get confusing. Try to pick a few trusted sources and go with that.

Totally depends on the gun, fluid nozzle size and painter's technique.

I use an Iwata LPH-400 1.3 currently, and with the LVX cap I can get a fan 12" wide. LV is about 10" and the LVB is close to 14". In most cases, its better to narrow the fan down a little to speed up the application. Considering moving to a 1.4 for clear because it's hard to keep a wet edge with the 1.3.

I would suggest shooting a test panel to see how the gun functions. A good 2 second blast at 6-8 inches should net you a nice cigar shaped pattern. Distance and speed will be determined by your fluid volume and speed. Practice a lot before doing anything you care abour!
