My aluminum radiator is not real shiny anymore. I think that I would just as soon have it black in the hope that it would look a little nicer and be easier to maintain that look.
So, what (if any) process could I use to get paint to stick. Should I use a light dusting of primer? And what paint should I use?
I know I need to limit the build-up. And I would prefer to stay away from rattle can paint. I would prefer some good paint that I can spray from a gun.
Looking for good tips and tricks.
Thanks!

I paint all my aluminum parts. Wheels, radiators, heads, intakes. No problem with adhesion at all. Actually it sticks better to aluminum than cast iron. Clean it with scotch brite pad, prime with etch or epoxy and spray. Here's a cross ram that is even bondoed. it's still on a buddy's car 10 years later Doug

did your original brass radiator come painted?
I would say it depends on what kind of paint you use. regular spray paint, you should be ok.
if you use a ceremic based, engine paint, I could DEFINITELY see that affecting the heat transfer rate of your radiator.
I painted the aluminum radiator in my Dakota. flat black, then laid a stencil on it, and sprayed the Mopar "M" in blue paint over top of that.
looks good when the hood is up, and I don't notice any problems keeping the engine cool.

I believe painting them black helps them absorb heat better.
You would think it is bad but we did a test here at work on one of our transmitters and the parts mounted out where it would get hot were painted black to help them handle the heat .
