I've been told many of the '68 motors came with race hemi orange pigment and then in '69 the motors started to get painted street hemi orange..

I'm going to give my '68 Hemi for my '68 Charger R/T a final coat of race hemi orange since Scott has seen many unrestored hemi '68 cars with the earlier color version...

hemi68,

My 68 Hemi Road Runner was a May, 68 build date. I had a bunch of items including the intake, water pump etc. from the original car and I verified the correct color with Frank Badelson as the "early" hemi orange. I bought a quart from him and it was a great match.

Good luck with your project!

My '68 hemi RR was a late June build, and also has the earlier hemi orange color.

Do not confuse "early hemi orange" with "race hemi orange". There were 3 colors depending on year.
64-65 = race (almost yellow)
66-68 = early (lighter orange)
69-71 = late (darker orange)

Do yourself a favor and use Gibson's paint. Its formulated to be a dead match and it builds up great.

Guys, I have also bought the "early" Hemi paint from Roger Gibson. It's nothing more than Race Hemi Orange, the paler "pumpkin orange" shade that 63/64 Max Wedges and Race Hemi engines had.

Rogers is specially matched to some original 66-68 engine paint samples from survivor cars he's seen over the years and is the same type of paint the factory sprayed on (a single stage Ditzler I believe). It's good stuff and worthy for high end restos. However, it should be noted that the actual shade of orange used at the factory could, and likely did, vary from one batch to the next (slight amounts, not huge amounts). Other than these types of extremely minor variabilities, you won't likely notice any appreciable difference if you compare Rogers paint to the Race Hemi Orange rattle can paint Mopar Performance sells in Rattle cans. Which were produced using the correct original formula and would be acceptable as "correct" fine for almost any level restoration IMO.

* BTW, as far as thier being 3 shades as detailed above, Roger explained this to me as well but according to original paint samples I have on many original parts ranging from 63 MW to 68 Hemi, I can see no appreciable difference between them, so basically while have the utmost respect for Roger, I'm not buying it.

And yes 68hemi, your engine looks to be the later/redder Street Hemi Orange. I've seen ALLOT of restored 66-68 Hemi cars wearing the incorrect Street Hemi Orange paint. It seems that it wasn't a widely known detail until the subject surfaced recenty. Allot of 66-68 owners have painted thier engines Street Hemi Orange simply because they were'nt aware of the differences.

This is a 64 Max Wedge intake re-painted with Mopars Rattle Can Race Hemi Orange (which matched some of the old original paint still on the intake VERY well). The part I layed on it for this comparison photo is a CAP valve which was originally on a 1968 Hemi Charger. It still has some original factory engine paint over spray/runs on it which was nice and thick in the drip area shown here. Pictures can be tricky but believe me, it's a dead on match for the intake.

I would like to clarify this earlier post of mine concerning "race hemi orange" paint. The last time I bought a MP can of that was in the late 80's and it was very light orange. It certainly wasn't correct for a street hemi. The "street hemi orange" they sold was much darker than any original paint items I had at the time. A would assume the "race hemi" paint they still sell today is the light orange color and if that isn't correct for the 64-65 cars than it's not correct for anything. Unless MP has reformulated their paints... nobody makes the 66-68 hemi paint in a can. The "street hemi" orange that MP sells is closer in color to 69-71 Hemi and 440. Since hemis were assembled and painted in a totally different plant with a different vat of paint than other BB HP motors there is going to be a slight difference in color.

Not a problem. What I'm describing is what the CURRENT Mopar Performance paint is. They sell two types, one is "Race Hemi Orange" the other is "Street Hemi Orange". I've found both to be quite accurate compared to old original paint samples on original engines I've compared them to. As far as "quality" pertaining to chip resistance or durability, I don't know, but the cans spray out much better than the old stuff did and it seems to cover well.

It sound like MP must have reformulated their paints then. Are you saying that what they sell in a can comes close to a 66-68 hemi paint? if so under which label?

Yes, they did go with a different mix, I believe different vendor as well.

Yes the "Race Hemi Orange" labled paint is a match to 64-68 Street Hemis and Race Hemis, as well as 62-64 Max Wedges.

It's this same paint that was used to paint the Max Wedge Intake used above in the comparison to the 68 factory original Hemi paint sample.

so you think mp racehemi orange in a spraycan would do the job,I will listen with them if they chip and buy one or two cans.I,m pulling my engine out this winter and will detail it some.
