Guys! I'm driving down the highway with my 2004 Neon SXT (134K miles on it)and all of the sudden I lost the tranny. After a tow home, I discovered fluid everywhere pumped out of the overflow and tranny fluid and radiator coolant did a nice exchange.
I don't have the tranny pan off yet, so I don't know how much coolant got into the tranny. But my questions is this...do you think I caught it in time that the tranny could get away with just a flush (and cooling system of course).
Or do these trannys generally go junk the instant coolant gets inside of them. My guess is, I hadn't driven it more than a couple of minutes that way and I'm hoping I can get away with a flush. What do you guys think? Thanks.

I have zero experience with this particular tranny. That being said. I would try the flush attempt. Even if it only keeps the tranny alive for a few weeks it gives you time to attempt to gather a new one or get the kit to rebuild that one. The other option is to check with a reputable tranny shop locally.

I have had 2 customers have the same issue as you. We did a super-flush on both after replacing the radiator and both of them are still running.

It happened to me on a 98 Voyager.Repaired the leak and flushed and flushed and flushed again.2 weeks later the tranny took a dump.Good luck. What you do is fix it then take the return line off and keep running fresh fluid through till it dosnt look like a strawberry milkshake.

That's positive!

look at it this way. replace the radiator. you obviously HAVE to do that now anyway. drain and flush the trans, and see what happens.

if the trans needs replaced, you'll find out soon enough!

Had a few cars at the shop that had that happen.New rad, flush the lines, change fluid and filter.Never had a problem with any of them.If you can find someone with a flush machine thats best for the trans.Might have to change the fluid and filter twice if not.Forgot to add I had one that no coolant got into the trans.Just trans fluid in the rad.Rocky

The clutch packs come unglued when they get wet so maybe if you caught it early enough and got it flushed it will live. All the Neons are known for having lousy tranny coolers built into the radiators that rot through and do what yours did.
My 95 developed a crack in the very top though being plastic and high miles so I replaced it with a brand new one for about 100 bucks, still cools fine and no tranny problems. When you do the refill be careful as they tend to superheat as the bubbles work out and blow coolant out the top as it fills and hits the superheated dry spots. I finally just filled the overflow and carefully drove it around and it purged all the air and was fine but before that I had to top it off like 3 times as it kept puking back up when I'd go to check the level in the radiator.
They normally run at 199f so they are on the edge of boiling over anyways without a pressure cap in place and at least 50/50 antifreeze.

Life's a little bit better when you hit a Camaro.

Manual trans swap will fix any issues.

As mentioned, it's a bit of a crapshoot at this point. Flush it the best you can and

Had seen quite a few that happen to. Your trans is probibly ok. Ussally the cooler lines carry more pressure that the cooling system does so coolant doesn't make into the trans. A trans flush wouldn't hurt anyway.

Another good idea is to by-pass the radiator cooler and install an aftermarket cooler in front of the radiator. Won't have to worry about it again. Everyone with a Neon should do this as a precautionary measure.

same thing happened to my wifes 03 - less than 3 elapsed hours before trans pan was pulled and flushed - changed the fluid and filter once a week for the next 2 weeks. Flushed the block - new radiator - eventually the clutch packs disenegrated anyway (took about a year)

Full trans rebuild - new converter - rad flushed for hours on a factory machine

trans lasted 2 hours before rear cluster fragged due to intermittent lack of return oil.

Found out it is almost impossible to flush everything out of radiator regardless of techinque.

trans #3 - another new converter - new external cooler - all OK

the clutch pack's WILL delaminate and plug everything up in the process.

$ 1800 dollar lesson learned.

seriously doubt it.

Like mentioned clutch discs do NOT like coolant and it WILL fail.

If you intend to keep the car pull it and be done with it.
