I want to build a 360 on a strict budget and achieve a minumum of 350 horsepower. here is what I have. 78 police 360, thermoquad, edelbrock performer intake, hedman headers. I want to just buy a re-ring kit from Northern or Summit, but I know compression is going to be an issue. Should I go with "302" heads to bump up my compression or go with new pistons? I have a set of "J" heads and several sets of mid 70s 360 heads too. I would like them to already have hardened seats though to help with my budget. any ideas, thoughts, are welcome. motor is going in a 73 swinger with 0500 OD trans.

Your gonna need more compression and cam. KB and Speed pro have some pistons To put you in the 9 to 1 range fairly cheap. You will get 50 different opinions on a cam. A tried and true purpleshaft to a fast ramp lunati or comp grind. All depends on how tame you want it to be. Id use an RPM air gap or LD340 intake. J heads are decent heads with a little work. They would benifit from a port match and bowl blend also.

If your budget is really tight, spend the money to build a good short block that you can later swap on better heads and intake manifold.
New pistons have multiple benefits. First you can get a piston that will raise the compression ratio. The oversize will give you more displacement, but more important the machine shop will bore and hone the block so the cylinders are round with no taper so the rings will seal better. The new ring lands of the new pistons will allow the rings to work better and last longer than worn pistons.
The Keith Black KB107 pistons are a good starting point. The are flat top pistons with valve reliefs that have a 1.675" compression height. with a 9.60" tall block, the piston would be 0.012" below the deck, so it will bring up compression really well.
For comparison, stock piston compression height it 1.576" so the piston is 0.111" below the deck.
The KB107 pistons are $222/set from summit.
If you wanted to use a forged piston, the KB "ICON" IC741 is a forged version of the piston above, but costs $487/set.
The connecting rods should have ARP bolts installed and the big ends checked and re-sized if needed. The bolts are $64.
Last time I had the machine shop just hone my 360 block it was $150, compared to bore and hone (with torque plates) for new pistons was $250. Reconditioning the rods might be another $100 in labor?
Anyhow, for an extra (above the cost of just a re-ring kit) $286 in parts and $350 labor you would have a good reliable, and higher compression short block.

Or just pick up a later 360 magnum engine, mild cam, valve spring upgrade and you'll make 350hp without the hassles.

Your gona have to build a quench type engine to make power with today's fuels, Closed type combustion chambers with close to 0 deck .... .040 or under piston to head clearance with the head gasket

this would be my suggestion...mag 360, hughes 1828AL regrind, hughes #110 springs and retainers, eddie magnum air gap, and headers.

cam/spring/retainers will be about $360. reuse the roller lifters. IIRC intake is about $240. good running magnum 360, what maybe $500?

using your existing parts, I'd get KB107's, and a lunati voodoo 60402 or 60403

..go to the inovate web site and read the carburetor tuning article.
..a lot of good performance info and contrary to popular belief, the rpm may be a better intake than the airgap.

You could clone the motor I had in my race car and ran for years. .030 over KB 107 pistons, stock rods with arp bolts, J heads that were "cleaned up" a little, and .484 lift purple shaft cam with 1.6 rockers, torquer 340 intake and 650 double pumper.

The motor ran for 14 years with out being apart, the only thing that needed to change was I had to go to .040 over when I freshened it last spring. I run a 75 Dart that weighs 3150 with me in it and it ran 11.90s about any time with a best of 11.78 @ 112 on 92 octane.

wow thats pretty impressive. seems a little too much for what I'm looking for though. my car will be a cruiser with 3.21 gears, OD trans, air, power disc brakes, and I want to run on 89 octane

Nice running combo. What converter and rear gear?

One of my favorite "low dollar hauler" builds from this board. Not mine. Best part: It was in a Green Valiant 4-door!!

My 360 started as a .040 over Napa rebuilt short block. I took it apart to check everything. I had the block decked (deck .015 head 63cc., gasket .028, compression 10.51)reversed the cast dished pistons on the rods and put in good rod bolts and had the rods resized. I put in an old Manley cam that I had. 443 lift 224@.050 I don't remember the lobe seperation but I think it was around 108. I used J heads pocket ported with 2.02 int. valves and 273 adj. rockers an LD340 intake with a 1" 4 hole spacer and a Vac. 750. For exhaust I used heddmen 1 5/8" headers, 3" exhaust with ultra flows ending at the axel. I used a 904 with a Dayco 2,400 stall converter and an 8 3/4 with 3.91's the slicks were 8"x 26"x 14". Suspension consisted of 6yl. bars and comp. eng. adj. shocks in the front and 002/003 superstock springs with Mopar perf. 50/50 xtra long shock in the rear. The car was a 70 Valiant 4 door it weighed 3,320 with me in it. With an electric water pump drive, 5/16" fuel line with holley mech. fuel pump and a homemade fresh air intake (dryer hose and a dual snorkle air cleaner)the best run was 11.96/113 but it typically went 0's and teen's in decent air at Atco and E-Town. Typical 60'was low 1.70's. With a looser converter maybe around 3,500 stall it probably would have gone 11.70's or 80's.

Converter is a turbo action 10" that stalled at 4200 and 4.56 with a 31 tall tire.... Freshened motor up last spring went .040 over KB 190 pistons 11.7:1 ported J heads with 2.08 intake valves. Comp cams knock off of the .509 purple shaft. Vic jr. intake and 950Hp E85 carb. Had converter issues and put a TCI 10" in that is way too tight (3200) and ran 11.45@118 with a 1.70 60ft. Ordering an 8" converter for this year....stay tuned

Try an online search of "proven 360 builds".Simple effective and $ wise. Works well and the HP #'s are real.

That was JCCuda's 70 Valiant.
