Is there a special socket used to remove this cap?

Hmmm. First socket I tried was a 3/8" but it did not fit. Time to look at it more closely I guess. Thanks! Quote:

Key here is 12 point & it has to be somewhat thin walled, a cheap socket won't be thin enough...

My 3/8 was not a 12 point. I took a (oh oh, here it comes from the purists...) 12 point 10mm and it worked like a charm. I love this site! Always get the answer I am looking for! Thanks very much for all the help!

I see a shiny plate with 2 extra holes (for a windage tray?) threaded in it??
What engine are we looking at? I've never seen this on an LA SB.
This is the aluminum rear main seal retainer for a BB. The two extra holes are for two of the oil pan bolts.

Send me a BB to play with, I'll pay for the shipping! I'm tempted to explore BB's, but it's so much easier today to just stuff a 400+ c.i. SB stroker in an A body and go, rather than find hens teeth parts.
Motorhome and Sea-body 440's are all over.
I can pickup decent cores for $350-375 all day long and another $50 for BB transmissions around here.
Lots of motorhomes at the end of their lifespan.
I used to think 340/360's were the be-all, end-all until I built my first 440. Along with the massive power increase, the ease of changing the timing (dist. up front) and changing the oil filter (up front and down low) had me sold!
