How wide is a durango rear axle compared to an early 70's A body rear axle? Will it fit?

Bump to the top. I know somebody has considered this swap. How do the widths compare?

when i had my 68 Dart i was looking at some of the jeep rear axles myself.sitting in traffic i thought they were really close to a bolt in.

fast forward to last weekend,i put a tape measure on my sons jeep cherokee 8 1/4 rear axle from a 94

the spring perch is same as the A-body 43" centers, they would need moved to the bottom of the tube for axle over spring but would bolt right in my 85-88 truck on the axle under the spring.

i have the A-body 8 3/4 from the dart in my 88 truck now with the 12" rims in the fenders.

from what i can tell i can bolt the jeep rear axle in my 85 and tuck 12s under it also.

i need to do some more measureing to confirnm the rim width and backset for sure.

my son just poped a dana 35 with 4.10s in his jeep on the same 43" perchs the 8 1/4 come off of...

i am junkyarding looking at some of the jeep axles now,i have not run up on a rango to measure yet but looks like it might be the 43" centers too.

I like bolt in deals and looks like I have found a way of scoreing better gears 3.73-4.10 sounds good to me

I will let you know if i run up on one I can pull a measurement off the axle flange to axle flange to see how it compairs to the width of an A-body 8 3/4

side note)i do have large brakes/green bearings which make mine a 1/2" wider by 1/4" each side..this is what i will compair it to..not A-body stock skinny 1 3/4' brake offset axles.

i would bolt this jeep axle in my 85 stepside this weekend but he has the side gears welded to the carrier for a lincon locker

I am thinking a jeep 8 1/4 with disc brakes would work also for a tub job,but the coil spring brackets need removed and perches centered and welded on.

IIRC your 57 truck has an A-body rear axle,,is it narrower than A-body specs?

what are you thinking about doing with the rango rear axle???

remember those are 6 lug axles IIRC

If you relocate the spring perches to the bottom they will bolt in, but you get stuck with that silly 6 lug bolt pattern.

i know I have seen a B-body 8 3/4 bolted right in a Dak..not sure if it had the perches moved.

but was slighly narrower than stock dak axle and fit a 10' rim with a 10.5 tire in the fenders(not usre if tubs were stock)

I measured the jeep axle I have from a 94 cherokee sport
43" perch centers and axle flange to axle flang was 61" with out the drum on.

anyone know the axle flange to axle flange on the A-body 8 3/4 with large brake axles?

i think the jeep axle and A-body are very close at 61' IIRC

anyone have the flange to flange measurement on a jeep axle with disc brakes??

i want one for the 85 truck as the bed is tubbed and ready for fattys ,this maybe the cheap ticket I have been looking for and disc brakes too boot

Had a brain fart, i forgot that the Durango was 6 lug. I am looking for options for another rear axle for the 72 Dart that the wife bought. It has a 7 1/4 in it now and i have plans for a 360 magnum motor for it.Around here, axles for A bodies are hard to come by.

I think the 94 jeep 8 1/4 would fit the bill in the A-body

and its 5 on 4.5 wbp

its already on 43" perch centers, just move them to under the tube for the car spring under axle.

8 1/4 should hold up fine in A-body with magnum SB

some 3.73s would be sweet IMO

94 cherokee sport XJ 2x

the dana 35 4.10 gear we put in was from a 85-86 cherokee XJ 4x4-4cyl

I would use a d35 but the axle tubes/u-bolts are smaller fit but has same perch center and width,no c-clips

the 8 1/4 has 3" tubes/u-bolts and c-clip alxes 43" centers and width

I wish he had not welded up the 8 1/4 with 3.73

i will have to scratch up another one for the 85,i hope the disc brake width is the same on them.

a killer 9 1/4 from a rango would be kool, weld up the 6 stud holes and drill for 5 on 4.5

If you look for a jeep cherokee or comanche from 86 to ?94 with the towing pakage they will usually have a dana 44 pretty strong axle . i think the grand cherokees with a v8 has a aluminum housing dana 44 also ,
