After the cam and timing set is installed, what keeps the cam it place from sliding forward & back (and timing gear from rubbing on the block)? Just the timing chain tension? I assume it is self-centering and finds it's own place??

Thanks

all your big block mopars have front worm gear drive on camshaft, for itermediate shaft. when engine runs worm drive pulls cam to back of block. cam is only guna bounce the distance of drive gap, my fourspeed cars have front roller buttons on cam fronts for no bounce with high rpm shifts.

hi
the cam lobes are ground with a taper that the lifter face is always presssig cam rearward, this angle also causs the lifter to rotate !

roller cams have no taper and need a button !

Correct answer... If you use a roller cam you need a thrust button, otherwise the lobe taper takes care of thrust... But a thrust button won't hurt anything & many high performance builds run one...

Okay, so if the cam is always being pulled toward the rear of the block, then what keeps the cam gear from running into the block?

Sorry for the ignorance, just trying to understand.

It's fine running against the block, there is not much force there, and plenty of oil.

he said 440 the solid bushed drive holds it stable and worms in, on rear drive cams that just mesh dizzy, cams are cut with larger taper .003 so tappet pressure drives them back. yes all v8 center cams drive in on cast cams. any time you increase valve spring pressure over 300lbs open and spin high rpms you want to use torrington thrust bearing timing set and button on cam front even with cast cams.solid roller billet steel cams have no taper on lobes
