Hey everyone, is there any rhyme or reason to assy and casting date codes on engines??? (specifically 383's in this case). I have a 70 Super Bee that has its 383 block cast 9/22/69 and the car was built 10/27/69. I also have a 71 Charger SE 383 2brl that I pulled the motor out this week, and discovered that its motor was coincidentally cast 9/22/69 also, with a car build date of around 2/15/71. Would this be common?? Strange that these cars have build dates over 15 months apart, but original blocks cast on the same day. Both of these cars have the numbers match engines. Any input on this would be great. THANKS!

Not real surprised , they just grabbed the blocks as they were in the pile , the one in your 71 could have ended up in the back/ bottom of the pile and they really didn't have a first in first out stock rotation scheme , or there was something wrong in the machining process and they one got shoved aside for a reason and it didn't get put back in the build stock till ????

Or I have no clue what I am talking about and someone that likes to restamp engines is thinking the same thing as I and just grabbed a block, restamped it and called it original ???

You are correct Johnrr.I work in a plant that builds G.M v-6 engines there is really no set way.A engine could have been pulled for a repair and not put back on the line for months or up to a year later.Depends on what's going on.

Hello. I could see if the engine was in a car that was worth something (if it were restamped), but this car is a 71 charger SE that is completely virgin, and hasnt been registered/driven since the mid 80's. To top it off, it is a 2 brl car. So, in short, I dont think anyone would waste their time. The car is really kind of a junk yard dog as sits. But, a true G383 block, matching VIN, with a cast date almost a year and a half before the build date of the car!

Mlubahn,

Nothing personal I'm sure but I think you missed the sarcasm.

Can I ask what the question is then ? 1970 was the beginning of the end for high performance thanks to the insurance industry , 1970 was the last year for the real HP engines from everyone but Chrysler which dragged it out for an extra year so it's not surprising to see a casting date to assembly date spread to me at that point in time . A guy that lived across the street from me had a 340 block , cast in 71 and it had a 73 partial VIN stamped on it , I never checked the actual assembly date .

The assembly date is the important date , unless of course the casting date is later than the assembly date , thats a restamp and I have seen it done and the person butchered up the casting date to try to pass it off .

YMMV

With '71 being the last year for the 383, I'd guess all inventory & stock of 383 blocks were rounded up and used.
