Hey everyone, Towards the end of last season my A833 was starting to every once in a while pop out of 2nd gear on deacceleration, usually at very low speeds....What became once in a while turned into atleast once every time I took it out right at the end of the year. I checked my shifter adjustments and all is well. Also had the trans apart a month or two before this and the hard parts all seemed to be fine. Also noticed at the track on the 2-3rd powershift it would sometimes "crunch" going in. Was running Type F ATF, but am going to be switching to some heavy gear oil. My question is, what could be causing the popping out of gear? I have the trans outta the car and want to get it ready over the winter since its going to see even more power and beating this year and I want it in good working order before i stick it back in. Any ideas??? Thanks!

Hey Mshred, I had the exact same condition on one of my 4 speed gearboxes...an 18 spline. It would pop out of gear upon deceleration. I removed it and inspected it and could not find anything wrong with it. So, I took it apart, and brought the 2nd gear to a very knowledgeable manual transmission guy who goes way back to the 60s with chrysler gearboxes. In about two seconds, he showed me the problem. On the Dog teeth that engage the synchro slider gear, the teeth were worn at a very very slight angle. When the gear is engaged, the ever so slight angle or ramp would allow the slider gear to slide off of the 2nd gear. The only repair for my gear box was a new gear, which I still have not bought (still have the tranny in the same condidtion . So, I would inspect those dog teeth for any angled wear. It should be absolutely straight, or have a slight angle that would keep the gear pushing slightly forward into 2nd gear when engaged. (When I took apart a newer Tremec tko 600 tranny, the dog teeth are machined on angles to do just that. I hope this helps, but at the same time, hopefully your issue is not a new gear like mine. Good luck, Greg.

Chrysler FSM....... Kinda late, but an in car check, could have been to see if the side shift cover loosened, or needed to be "reprositioned" on the main case PS...I'd run 80-90W gear oil next time, leave the ATF for slushboxes

Yes it is a problem with the syncro teeth on 2nd gear. As stated above they get worn on an angle over time. However if you look close there will be 2 sets of 3 on the coast side that are wider than the rest of the teeth. These will be the only teeth that are shinny and worn. I have had good luck machining those back to allow the other 24 teeth to take the load. Give me a call if you want to know more.

Hey everyone, thanks for the input! I do have the tranny out of the car like I said. When it was in the car I checked to make sure it was fully engaging every gear, adjusted shifter stops correctly. Side cover was tightened down (I was messing with that in trying to fix some issues I had with having to break my palm to be able to get reverse). It looks like it is what everyone is mentioning about synchro teeth. I guess I will take it apart and check it out, and inspect all the other synchro teeth on the other gears while im there. Would anyone be able to post a picture of what part in the transmission it is exactly? I have an idea I know what it is, but I just want to make sure I am looking or inspecting the right part since I am no expert by any means Dan, I think I will be giving you guys a call about this! I was planning on ordering any parts that I would have needed from you guys anyways. Do you recommend the machining process or an entire new gear altogether? I'll be in touch soon Thanks all!

New 1-2 slider and a second gear It's a 23 spline right? Not that much money for an easy repair.I'm sure I have a good slider and I need a tooth count or year and ratio to see if I have a good second gear.Drop me a PM with what ratio you have and maybe we can make a deal Gus

I had my 4-speed in my 340 Dart years ago keep popping out of second when on the gas. It ended up being the rear bearing was worn causing the shaft to move some and force it out of gear also. Ron

worn teeth common to individual gear (typical 1st thru 3rd)
I've ran four speeds with gears a lot worst than that , they didn't pop out of gear OP, look at the slider to see if it is ate up on the front and back sides that engage the gears, there is a reason it is jumping out of gear, it is not engaged far enough to stay in gear. The magic(hard part to figure out) is what is casuing that, slider, shifter adjustments, rooster combs or wear on the selector arms on the cover , gear wear, slider wear or?

Before pulling the trans.. Double check the linkage adjustment, make sure the lever/gear is fully engaged and there is enough throw on the adjustment rod...
