I actually got off my duff and worked on the hot rod today. The list of accomplishments is short. They include :
Swapping the trans pan (made a mess).
Changing the fuel sending unit seal.
Installing the valve covers.
Removing the old cable throttle linkage.
and...
wait for it...

I broke the front cooler line fitting inside the transmission.
While removing the kick down linkage, I found the front line was loose. Tightening the fitting didn't work. It was stripped. When I tried to remove it, the socket wanted to slip off the fitting. I put an extension on the socket so I could hold it at the correct angle and tried again. My reward was having the fitting snap off flush with the transmission case.

If I recall correctly, these are a tapered pipe thread. I do not want to remove the other one for fear of breaking it too. I have a 518 in the garage but don't know if they're the same size.

This is a brass fitting in an aluminum case. If I'm not careful, I'll end up doing really ugly things and the transmission case could be damaged.

I have extractors but don't know how well they're going to work on this.
If I have to drill, can I drop the pan and access this thing or will I have to disassemble the transmission to get the swarf out?

What size thread are the fittings? I've got a variety of SAE, NPT, and even metric taps.

You'll have to pull the Valvebody if you drill it , it's 1/8 npt . An easyout should get it out.

I remember the 518 cooler lines being larger but I couldn't remember if the holes were larger too.

Sorry for your bad luck Feets & OT this reminded me of a Q if you could tap to the next size & run 3/8 lines for more cooler flow using a 3/8 cooler of course

I have a 518 sitting in my garage. It was going to go into the hot rod but now it's marked for the Imperial.

If I [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean] up the case on the hot rod maybe I'll swap the 518 in the Imp now and put it's transmission in the hot rod.

They come out real easy with an extractor.I like the ones that you turn in counter clock wise and they spin right out.I think the 518 fittings will be for 3/8 line not 5/16. Any local trans shop should have the correct ones..Just remember not to tighten the new rear fitting to tight into the case, you can crack the case.

it will come out pretty easily with an easy out,,,at least I've never had one that didn't .

most ( but not all ) of the later OD trans use a larger cooler fitting and are not interchangeable without drilling and retaping the case

if you want one to replace the broken one you have now, send me your address I have them here

Thought they were all 1/8" pipe fittings in the case.

I do appreciate the offer.
There is a local hardware store that is good at stocking odd parts like that. When I pull the pieces out I'll try to match 'em up there first. The place is close to work and I hit it during lunch.

I haven't been able to find that specific fitting even at an autoparts store .

Yes that fitting is brass and should be easy to get out as long as you can get to it.
The fitting is available at most auto parts store. It'll be male 1/8" pipe thread X 1/4 or 5/16" inverted flare fitting from the factory. Edlemann or Dorman will make the fitting.

I've only seen them for the standard off the shelf line to screw into and not the way they are from the factory , good to know since I have a limited supply of transmissions to rob them from.

Do you have the part number ?

I did too till I stumbled across one (brass) that was larger. No sure if it was OE or not but if those 2 enter/exit points just inside the case itself ain't restricted to less than the fitting ID I'd think the larger ones w 3/8" lines/cooler would give more flow

The 727 fitting is Edelman #148520, 1/8"-27 NPT X 5/16" flare.

Find a short Torx bit that is the size that can be driven inside the broken piece(interference fit). Usually the tapping required to get the torx bit to bite will also serve to loosen up the broken pc. Just carefully back it out. Works great..
