Hey all quick question here,
I stripped down a 1977 318 for a quickie overhaul and found it has been gone through before. It has .030 over flat top pistons and the rods and mains are .010 under as well. One thing I did notice was that two of the connecting rods are "Copper" colored. It doesnt appear to be paint, but some other coating or cleaning process? I havent see anything like that before.
anyone know what is going on here.
Thanks
Scott

Not unusual to see that in motors straight from Mopar,Especailly SB Probally a coating put on them to bring them into spec. on the rod bearing or wrist pin ends Or both ends

IIRC those rods were factory check and had a dye put on them, they did every so many comeing down the line.

sorta like the stock pink rods chebby guys drool over, they will hunt up 8 pink rods, suposed to be the strongest of the stock rods and passed inspection.

I have changed colors on metal by soaking it in carb cleaner..but never got a copper color.

but this is all hear say from my machine shop guy

Yup, just copper plating to bring the big-end bore into spec.

Thanks everyone,
So Rick, I'm assuming that if the plating is to bring the rod back into spec, is this likely then a Mopar Remanufactured engine?

I had a 318 that was original to the car and had 3 copper clad rods in it.

Chances are it was done during the original assembly. If the rods were manufactured a wee bit undersized they could plate the rods to get the proper width. It sure beats scrapping them.
