My Duster was built in LA and had no front undercoating. I know the front wheel well was mostly red at one point, then fogged black. My question is do you think this spray pattern would have been done by a factory gun or a rattle can. I'm trying to get in touch with the original owner about it but haven't had any luck so far.

This picture of AndyF's is what got me thinking. Not sure if its an LA built car or not.

The LA factory cars were not undercoated in the front (in all examples I've seen) but they did have varying degrees of sprayed on black out paint applied to hide the body color from showing when veiwed from the sides of the car. The sloppy application looked backyard but that's how they looked, fast and sloppy. All indications I've seen point towards the same guy who blacked out the radiator core support area also did the forward wheel wells. Don't lose sight of the fact that YOUR car is it's own blueprint for getting the details right, rely on all those predissasembly pictures you took that I ragged you about early on

Blow n go. I just wanted to be sure thats how its supposed to look before I let my 5 yr old in there with a can of Krylon

No worries, as I've stated before I have lots of pictures of how it looked before going to the blaster. I've had several of them enlarged and printed out for the painter and myself to use as a guide.

I was second guessing the factories sloppy black application.

Interesting post . . . yes, I would agree, that the pictures taken BEFORE disassembly are the most important !

My 70 Sport Satellite is an LA car, and it was totally undercoated ! So, that is what it is going to be after I get it back together ! Yay for digital cameras !!

Was it optioned with factory undercoating? FWIW My comments pertain to non undercoated cars only.

You mean no broadcast sheet? Did it have a hood pad? Are you 100% certain it's factory and not dealer applied after production?

No broadcast sheet.

Do I know 100% its not dealer applied, no, but based upon high end resto shop photos I have seen, and other factory car photos I have seen the general patterns, and application fit the profile exactly particularly around the front wheel areas.
