Years ago I did a battery relocation in a mid 70s Camaro. Now I want to do this in my Charger. I have a battery box from a A-100 van. I cant recall what the recommended route is to run the positive cable! I've seen some run from the battery located behind the drivers tire, across the axle hump and through a hole in the floor, forward to the starter. I've also heard of people running the cable INside, under the carpet. I'm not sure of which way to go.
Also, what do you do about the smaller guage positive wire that runs to the relay? Do you just run a jumper wire from the Alternator?
Thanks...Greg

I've had a trunk mount battery (Direct Connection kit) in my Challenger T/A for about 30 yrs, no issues, cable mounted inside under the carpet, tucked inside drivers sill, over the rear wheel well, clipped along the underside of package tray/rear qtr,...battery on the PASSENGER side...use a grommet where it passes thru the firewall to the starter, on an auto car, you could use the clutch rod hole, I prefered to exit just under the firewall pinchweld flange...but again use a grommet and secure the cable WELL, as it will be the biggest smoldering wick if you hack it in the car

Exactly how I did the Charger.

I put my battery on the pass side of the trunk (best for weight transfer on acceleration). The cable runs under the package shelf to the drivers side, down through the trunk floor and follows the driver rocker. Routing of the cable is similar to the fuel line on the opposite side.

I didn't want the cable running through the pass compartment.

The one on my 67 Dart GTS chafed through the firewall grommet and set the car on fire! Make sure to use a nice, thick grommet and check it periodically!

I always run mine under the car for this very reason, you can tuck it up nicely against the body channel or in my case, the subframe connectors, it always amazed me that NHRA let them in the interior, oh wait!, nothing surprises me when it comes to NHRA's train of thought.

I lost my 69 RR and a 70 Chally RT and my shop over a short that caused the cable to set the interior on fire. Run it under the car, it does not take much and is much safer!

UNDER the car, not in the interior! Along the frame sections and subframes! Fire is a bad thing.

I'd run it under the car although it would be okay in the car as long as you wire it properly. It should only be hot when starting the engine. Otherwise it should be disconnected.

You need to make sure the feed is dead when not cranking, otherwise you are really risking a dead short on a very large gauge cable. It is not possible to fuse the starter feed due to the high amp draw so use a Ford-style relay with a feed from the switch that has a fuseable link.

As far as the routing under the car seems safer although both ways can be safe as long as you do it right.

I ran mine along with the OEM wiring along the left sill clips provided for the wiring. Ran it through a length of cheap garden hose first for added safety. Welding cable does have a pretty thick rubber coating though.

I run mine inside the car under the carpet. But I put the starter cable on a Ford type solenoid I mounted in the trunk right next to the battery box. That way the cable is only hot while cranking. Then I put a 8 gauge wire from the battery to the starter relay so the car can pick up the hot feed. And I put a 60 amp fuse link right on the battery cable to fuse the hot wire to the relay in case it shorts. I bolted the fuse link right to the battery and use an eye-let on the 8 gauge wire and bolted it to the other side of the fuse link. Ron

WINNER!

Grommets on a high amp line like that, use a pass through. Nothing like a 1 gauge unfused wire going to ground.
