Hi,
I have a recently built 360LA No more then 500 miles on it. It is making a tapping noise and has the following symptems.

Has true duel exhaust and smokes out of the drivers side pipe only.
Will die at stops unless I put into neutral or give it extra gas to keep the RPM,s up.
Runs Decent at about 2000 to 2500 RPMS in second gear. Just running really rough.
Any help would be great -RedLeg

Did you built it? I guess not. Take it back to who did and ask them to look at it. Sounds like a lifter is ticking and it has some other issues. The smoking out 1 side is not a good sign.

Take care,

Thanks for the replies, I have the Intake popped off and the valve covers off. How do I check for a faulty lifter/s Nothing looks abnormal although I dont know how keen of an eye I have... The problem with the engine builder is I broke the engine in last june. It ran fine and then I had to weight to get it shipped where I am stationed so the warrenty I had was for the break in period but it is passed.

Found the reason for the smoke I believe. Fuel in the oil... Now to find the culprit for that!

Check the fuel pump because they will leak into the engine if the diaphram developes a leak.

Ok, I'll look into that. How do I test lifters? Also all the rockers are on a single shaft. what are the torqu specs for the shafts bolts? There are two Rockers that slide from side to side a tad.. This could be where my Tapping noise is coming from?

i think it would smoke out both sides if that were the case.

Two things come to my mind when you say fuel in the oil , 1. is the float set to high in the carb or is the carb old and needing rebuild ?
2. How long did you run it with gas in the crank case? Because it is very hard on the bearings.
I also would due a compression test on all 8 cylinders to see what you have and post the results .

Out of curiosity what is the oil pressure reading on your engine from cold to hot? Also check to make sure your rocker shafts are installed correctly. The oil holes in the shafts should be facing down into the rockers. If they are facing up you need to turn them over the other way. Are your rockers factory hydraulic type or adjustable? Can you give a breakdown of how the engine was built parts wise?

On start up the PSI is upto 60 and when it warms up it drops down to 40. It has Factory Hyrdolic rockers. It is a 360La Bored .60 over with KB pistons 9.75/1 compression. Bullet racing cam. Factory heads that have been worked over.

The Carb is an Eddy 600. As for the Lifters... How would I go about testing them. I have the intake popped off and can see them. Can they be tested without removing them first?

Taht does not sound good , check each rocker to see how loose things are ,there shouldn't really be any lash . snap a picture and post it of the cam , that does not sound good.

Oh and lose that POS air cleaner , that is a FIRE waiting to happen ...
