I am using a Stage 5 open plenum intake with 2 750 vacume secondary square bowl Hollys on a 540 c.i. Hemi with a street roller (248i, 254e). A short drive with the carbs connected in sequence, (both carbs open together), produced an almost uncontrollable situation. Just a small amount of throttle puts the car sideways! I am thinking about using a progressive linkage that would open the rear carb first and bring the front carb in at approximately half throttle, more like factory HEMI linkage. My qestion is: would I risk a poor mixture distribution problem, (lean condition) by doing this? I intend to do a lot of street driving and cruising with the car and the violent drivability is a concern.

Vacuum secondary carbs might not be a good idea since you can't control when they open. One easy thing to do would be to disconnect the secondary linkage on both carbs. Then try driving it with what is basically two 2-bbl carbs. See how it works. If that works okay then you might want to consider two small carbs such as a pair of 500 cfm Edelbrock carbs. I used dual 500 cfm Edelbrocks on a 505 inch big block and they worked really well.

You built a monster of an engine , what did you expect ? Put smaller carbs on it, or change the intake.

Take a close look at the design of the stage 5 it's to small single plane intakes with a small passage between the 2 intakes , trying to run the carbs progressively is a bad idea with the design of the intake.

What kind of tires do you have on the car and what gear in the rear?

Yes I did build more engine than I need. When searching for a hemi, I found a shortblock with the best parts money could buy for less than a used up original. The parts were brand new. I used stock unported MP aluminim heads, kept the cam small etc. What I ended up with is a torque monster. I do intend to street drive the beast, but not ALL the time. The gear is 3.54, all I need with over 600 ft lb of torque. I am using Coker red line radials for the street and will use a full slick for the track.

First I ever heard of an issue having too much power. Perhaps run a tall gear set, like a 323 or 307 rear end ratio. You wont get all that torque multiplication.

The smallest gear you can get for a Dana is a 3.54 so that idea wont work.

Take care,
