I have been chasing a over charging problem
in my car since the last racing season, have
been thru every circuit on the car multiple
times, and have changed everything on the car,
that I thought could cause a problem, never
could actually pin it down to being one certain
thing, it has been driving me nuts trying to find
the problem, but today I changed the msd ignition
box and the problem is gone, if I hadn't saw it
with my own eyes I never would have believed that
the box could have caused this problem, car always
fired right up and ran fine, no indication of any
problems what so ever, but a friend had a new box,
and let me try it to just eliminate the ignition
as the problem, so just a heads up if you are
chasing electrical problems, and have the msd
ignition system on the car, don't be like me
and over look the obvious, the box was only a
a couple seasons old, but I guess that don't
mean a lot when you are chasing problems.

Run a ground directly to the head from the msd box.You cant ground a msd box enough.

That's a head scratcher alright. Over-charging due to ignition ?
I'd love to know the how's and why's on this one , because that is the last place I'd be looking too.
Of course , that's where I usually find the problems.........but I'm just sayin.

would like to see how it was wired. can't see it causing an overcharging problem. probably a ground issue

As said I think it is a ground issue Try A_B_A and install the old box again and see if it comes back ?

Don't know what to say about the grds on the car, this is what I
have any you be the judge on the grd issue, have 2 studs welded thru the frame rails in back and front of the car, I use these in back for weight if the car needs it, that is what I grd the battery - to, on the battery side, there is a 6 gauge welding cable going to both studs in the back to tie them together, then up front I have 3 grds on the engine going to the studs I have welded in the frame on both sides, 2 head grds and 1 block grd, no grds on the ignition system to sheet metal anywhere, the + and the - on the msd goes to the back of the car with 8 gauge wire with the connectors crimped and soldered, and shrink sleeve covered, hooked directly to the battery, I cannot believe the box was the problem, but changing it fixed, and also 1 poster said he would have to do and A-B-A test, well I don't chase problems like this and not know why, changing it back had the same results as before an over charging issue, I am gonna send the box to Pat Collins at techwest, and have him check it out to see if there is really something wrong with it, not MSD, they always say they are good, and nothing is wrong.

it would be interesting to see how much current each ignition box is pulling? Sounds like the bad box might have been pulling more current?

How is the charging system setup? Where is the voltage regulator mounted and where is it sampling the voltage?
