Installing a fiberglass hemi hood scoop on my steel Barracuda hood. Question is how should I cut out the hood under the scoop? What's the accepted way...square, circle, etc? What size square, circle, etc?

I was thinking of cutting the hole the same shape as the scoop but 1 inch smaller. Thoughts?

Looks best with the cutout in the same shape as the scoop.

Depending on how far back you place it you may be also be cutting into the rear brace. I had to on my 69 because of the crossram. I them reboxed it as this portion ties into the hinge area.

I also made a very small notch on the rear flange to help the scoop bend and then filled it.

Scoops are made for the flatter 68 hoods as you know 69's are shaped a bit different.

R U doing this for fresh air for the motor or engine cooling ?

Good information, thanks.

I'll see if I can mount it far enough forward to avoid the rear brace.

I would cut it out a tad bigger than the air-cleaner ... that scoop will sure help performance.

Maybe I'll build a plate to seal the hood to the air cleaner.

Last one. Too bad you aren't closer. I would have sold you this one if you liked it.

I installed a WO/RO 23 hoodscoop on my 66 Coronet. Hemieddie had a template that not only showed where the scoop mounted but also the size and shape of the hole to cut. Found him on the internet

I've done a couple A Bodies with that scoop. Because both of them were using cross ram HEMIs, the hole was large and had to cut into the back brace of the AAR FIBERGLASS hood. We then restructered the back brace to fit the hole. If you are running a single four, you will be able to keep the brace intact.

I set the motor in, no carb, and placed the hood on with out hinges. I find the center and then cut to an area smaller (obviously) then the scoop.

Can't you hand deliver

Hopefully it won't take me too long to cut the hole and install.

Thanks to all for the help and ideas.

Om my '69 I cut the hole just a little bigger than the air cleaner. Remember that the engine is NOT centered, just mark it where the air cleaner stud hits the hood and measure from there. You'll probably have to drill some access holes in the bracing that are large enough to get the nuts on the studs in a few places. For the front braces I used small diameter stainless tubing with stainless flat head machine screws.

Measure twice, cut once!

Well, that would be quite a roadtrip!
I don't remember what I cut the hole with now. I did the hood for a friend a couple of years ago. Then he went with a different intake so the hole wasn't far enough back. The scoop he is using now is a longer style and I had to cut a lot of the rear bracing away.
Anyway, I think I just used a sawzall to rough cut the hole, then smoothed it all up with a grinder. But I might have used a nibbler. It wasn't very hard to do.
Good luck,
Dallas

My opinion---just cut a hole slightly larger than the air cleaner. This will accomplish 2 things--- first, isolate fresh air coming into the engine & second, offer more rigidity to the mating surface when bonding 2 dissimiliar materials (metal & fibreglass) together.
