It may be overcharging during a condition you have not replicated during your VOM test. Is the alternator hot? Are all other electrical draws working ok?--Lights?

50 deg sunny north texas day. had the radio playing didn't notice any problem there. YES the alternator was very hot. the Voltage reg was cold and the sealed gell cell battery was steaming out the vent holes. went about 100 miles round trip with the last 40 in one leg no stops. Noticed a smell when I got home poped the hood and saw battery "smokeing". I guess I'll just change out the VR and see if I have the problem come back.

Smoking? 14.0 is not over charging, and agreed that 15 plus is. Are you running a volt meter or an amp meter? Are the lights too bright? If you were over charging then one of the fields on the alt could be bad and cause this.
I had this happen exactly. The poreclain thread/fitting had a slight crack in it and caused my alt to over charge - saw the numbers on my voltmeter jump up to nearly 17!!! Pulled it apart, found a hairline crack in the threads. Replaced it, never happened again. Hope that helps.

Check your VR for good ground. Also, a shorted cell in the battery can cause high charging voltage.

I can fix it... my old man is a television repairman. He's got the ultimate set of tools... I can fix it.

(quote)I unpluged the VR and it made no diffrence so then I unplugged one field wire at a time and on the second wire it finally quit charging. Just wondering why you kept going back to the voltage regulator after this.
I have mechanical Aptitude. I can screw up anything.

There's also the possibility that the battery has a simple shorted cell.

My vote also. The voltage you read across the battery is too low for a recently over charged battery unless a cell has shorted out.
