I have put a 5.7 hemi in my 66 coronet. It has the original 727 in it. I had to buy a new torque convertor from TCI to get them together. We finally got it running yesterday and it was running good. We decided to pull it out of the garage and take her for a test drive. As soon as I put it in drive, it stalled out. After that I tried starting it two or three times but it wouldn't turn over. Then suddenly it seized up and wouldn't even turn the motor over. It felt like the transmission was seized up. Today the guys got it running again, drove it about 100yards then she started bogging down and shut down again. Then it started not turning over again. I don't think its a motor problem. I don't know jack about transmissions. What does this sound like?

Can you turn the motor over manually by turning the crank or converter? Did the converter bolt up to the flexplate with no pullup?

The Gen III Hemi crank extends a little further from the block than previous V8's, this could shove the converter into the trans too far and cause the binding...only way to know for sure is to unbolt the converter from the flexplate and see if it will turn.

Was the new TCI torque converter that you bought made for your 1966 transmission, or for the 67-up transmissions? The input shaft was changed in 1967, and almost all aftermarket torque converters are made for the 67 and newer transmissions.

Yes, it was for the 66 model 727.

I knew about the projection. I bought a flex plate from Mancini that is made for this swap and adjust for this offset. I am nor sure what you mean by "pull up" though?

What he's refering to is..When the engine/trans were mated there should be some amount of freeplay between the torque converter and flexplate...The torque converter should have slid back into the trans far enough that you had to "pull up" the convertor to meet the flexplate....That's why he's asking you to unbolt the unit from the flexplate and give the convertor a spin to make sure it spins freely between the plate and trans...
