I'm considering buying a ported rebconditioned set from Indy. I have several sets to trade in to offset the cost. My build is a mostly stock 440 for a car that I plan on driving more often than just weekends or car shows. Compression will be in the 9.5 to 10.0 range. I can have a set rebuilt locally, but no one local can CNC port heads. I just want the most bang for my buck.
Thanks,

Jerry

It's actually under the 'aero-head' part of the Indy ads in MCG and Mopar Muscle. On the latest MCG its on page 25.

Hmmm strange, I wonder if these are just the aero heads that people have been buying? Price is cheaper though...

Muscle Motors is doing cnc on iron heads.I would buy from them before I would Aerohead.

Unless you have a class racer or other application that mandates stock heads I cannot see any way you can do better than a new set of aluminum heads. Core prices for cast iron heads are low and shipping is high. Plus, Aerohead might, but I haven't run into any head rebuilder that wants to buy extra cores. Got a stack of used cast iron heads in my garage that's worth scrap only.
Porting a stock iron head costs more than the complete aluminum replacement head.

Have you called Aerohead?? They didn't buy cores when I called them a month ago. Hopefully you'll have better luck than me.

MuscleMotors does. They told me they'd pay $50.00 a set, core value. And that was towards a stroker kit purchase that we were discussing. Not sure if it was contingent. And it WAS contingent on whether they felt their current supply was low enough to need any.

Not sure if its still in effect, but Aerohead/Indy used to charge an extra $100 for the 906/452 castings. And I have to agree, by the time you buy the remanned heads and have them ported, you are close to new aluminum territory...

anything you buy from Indy has to be thuroughly checked out before use.

Thanks to everyone for your responses! Aluminum is looking more attractive.

Dwayne (fast68) has a few sets for sale in the BB parts for sale section here if you want to get an idea of what a ported set of OEM heads can cost and flow. For a mostly stock build I would get a good valve job and call it a day.

Except, every set of BB Mopar heads I've ever had freshened up needed valve guides and some of the tips where the rocker rub can be pitted quite often.

CNC'ing heads for "mostly stock" build is too pricey. Buy an electric Sears die grinder, a few carbide cutters and have at it if you really want a set of ported heads. Just opening up the bowls can make a big difference. If you hurt a head, big deal, factory iron castings can be had around here for $50 a pair or less.

Dean, Didn't know sears had an elec. die grinder, would you happen to have a part # because i've tried googling there tools & come up jack squat. Thanks.

Found this, seems to be the only one sears offers for 192.00, nice rig, but for 250.00 you can buy a 30 gal. compressor at lowes & a 19.95 die grinder, then the compressor will come in handy for other things.

Several guys on the C body board have them and they seem to be a reasonable deal for someone just wanting a stock rebuild. Nobody had them come apart on them. They aren't cost effective if you buy them and then send them off to be ported.

The old Craftsman die grinder was discontinued a couple years ago .
