First off I don't know their proper name and have only seen them on 1 '72 RR. They both bolt to a stud near the wiper motor and the other ends go diagonally to the fender bolts on either side. Questions.
1. Are they only on 72's
2. Are they body color or black, (i have only seen black)
3. What is their purpose?
4. Do I need them or can I leave them off

They stiffen up the front clip considerably. Reduce fender wobble. F-bodys had them too--body color.

My 74 has them as well. I guess they were there to tie the fenders to the cowl for some extra rigidity. As to how much different they really make, probably not that much. They can't control any flex side to side, just fore and aft along their length.

They do make a difference. Factory added them for a reason. The shake is an issue on previous generation cars too.

That being said, they were deleted on N96 cars due to clearance to the air box. That's a 72-only issue. A lot of guys put them on anyway, including the PO of my car.

Oh... they also come in real handy for tying up your headers with bungee cords while you're pulling the heads, changing the starter, pulling the transmission, or any other repair work that requires detaching the headers. DAMHIK.
