Finally figured out that my Roadrunner's 383 has a forged crank, rods, but unsure on the pistons as I haven't cracked the motor open yet.

On a lot of forums, the 383 in 71' seems to be a gray area, as in some people say they had cast cranks while others say 383's always had forged cranks/internals.

My dad kinda gave me an "aha" moment. I had been trying to figure out for a while now, and he said "Why don't you just look at the harmonic balancer?"

So I checked and its a forged style harmonic balancer. The car is a 4 speed as well and again built June 10th, 1971. Hope this helps someone out there.

I went through the same deal on mine, because it was an original 2 barrel motor and the balancer was changed to an aftermarket one. This is before the rebuild. I pulled the oil pan and verified a forged crank. Yours most definately is a forged one. As far as pistons you won't really know until you pull a head.

my 71 was a forged crank, flat top pistons with 4 notches. I understand that some 2 bbls were fotged, 4bbls were all forged.

4 valve reliefs in a 383 ?? I have never seen a piston with valve reliefs in any 383 .

As far as the OP's 383 , it's a 383 HP it would have been a forged crank. only the 2bbl's in 71 got the cast crank and apparently not all did ???

My 71 Cuda was a 383 4bbl. 4spd..It had forged crank, flat top pistons that were down about .075 in the hole. Not real good for compression. When I rebuilt it I had .055 taken off the deck I dingle ball honed it and put the stock cam back in. With an edelbrock dual plane a vac. 750 cheap 1-3/4" headers full 2-1/4" exhaust and 3.91 gears and on street tires in a friends 71 Cuda @ 3600 lbs. it would go 13.50's at 101 mph. The black Cuda is the car the 383 came out of the brown Cuda is the one it went into.

not always a good idea to rely on the dampner as to whether or not the crank is cast/forged,....instead look at the parting line on the crankshaft, if the parting line is very small and defined, it's cast, if the parting line is wide like a 1/4-1/2" it's forged,....sometimes cast cranks are remachined and internally weighted for a netural balance, and sometimes people just throw anything together with no regard to balance

Interesting... what did you shift at with the stock cam? Also, did you ever do a compression check after the rebuild?
