I was wondering what type of heads where supposed to be on my 1970 340 Duster. It has a 1972 340 block in it and the heads don't have any markings that I can tell if they are correct for the car or the engine. I am looking for a date coded block and was wondering if I should look for heads also.

Could have 894 x heads or 915 heads

I have/had 70 340 cars with both.

IIRC, my 70 340 had 2.02 intakes...

Where are the numbers located on the heads. There is ton of paint on the engine. My Demon has J heads on it. I was figuring that the Duster should have x heads on it. There isn't any letters on the head of the 70. Could this mean they are 72 heads on the 72 block.

O J U or could be blank.

Look at the casting numbers either 894 or 915 will be the right vintage.

I don't recall where the casting numbers are supposed to be located. Sorry my memory isn't what it used to be.

On some you have to pull the head to see the casting numbers that are cast in the valley side of the head in the area of the exhaust crossover. Even if they are 72 heads don't sweat it. The only difference would be teh 1.88 intake valves and you will more than likely be better off with them any way as they will most times offer you more low end than the 2.02 valves will which come more into play at RPM's over 6000 or so.

You are correct with stock cams, but if 2.02
heads are used with a proper cam to support
the larger valve and pocket size you have more
power and the low end will be there.
