Tucson AZ,
1) What are the advantages and disadvantages to having the leaf springs mounted parallel to one another as opposed to spread wider at the front than at the rear?

2) Should a pair of leaf springs when removed from the vehicle maintain a matching arch or should the passenger side spring (Superstock 456/457) display a higher arch? I hestitate to bother installing them with this discrepany.

FWIW, Application is a 73 GTX used primarily as a drag car with limited street use.

Any thoughts?

In a drag racing environment, you are correct. There is no advantage. In a handling environment, there is some difference. The splayed mount will tend to tighten up the rear of the car and give the feel of an increased spring rate. It also will increase roll resistance and reduce roll steer. It may also provide for creation of a lower rear roll center height, depending on the overall suspension/axle lay out.

On the street, it will create a more solid feeling and predictable handling car. THis is why all E bodies and 71 and up B bodies had the splayed mounting set up.

You´re right, but the SS Springs are designed for Drag Racing only. That´s why they have so much arch, the Mopar road racing spring is designed with an arch of 1" to help steer the car. The superstock 456/457 are designed for drag only, not for handling

The super stock springs will need the extended front spring eye support. The super stock springs are shorter than your stock springs. As far as moving the front of the springs , stock location is already moved in. Make sure the weight of the car matches the springs.

Tucson AZ,
I had the set of 456/457 SS on the car for about a year and noticed after several trips to the track the passenger side of the car was leaning. Upon disassembly I noticed that both springs were bent on both the front and rear segment. I took them to a spring shop here in Tucson and had them install a longer secondary spring to help support the main leaf as well as a longer spring in place of the very bottom leaf where it also displayed signs of bending. The car weighs roughly 3500lbs and short of possible binding on the front bushing I'm not entirely sure what to attribute the bending to.

Long story short the springs have been modded slightly now and upon installation noticed the overall arch of the passenger side spring is about an 1" higher and to install the rear shackle with the spring unloaded is kind of a stretch. I feel like it is overarched at this point and may need to go back to the spring shop for work unless this seems normal to any of you guys.

With regard to parallel mounting of the springs I was planning on installing offset hangers up front to straighten them out. It seems like it would allow the springs to work better and take the bushings out of a small bind both front and rear. Unfortunatley that also requires moving my spring perches on the rear end. Not a big deal because tire clearance would be beneficial as well.

I just want to make sure I'm on the right track. I don't want another spring failure but also don't want to be chasing my tail and wasting time. Any new thoughts?

Your car is a 4 speed it sounds like. Get the 002/003 springs and put the pinion snubber touching the floor. Clamp both springs on the first spring in front of the rear housing.

True, but that doesn't stop countless numbers of people from running them on the street anyway and then wondering why they look and behave differently.

Every set of SS springs I've ever used did sit higher on the passenger side. To get a more level ride height you can turn up the driver's side torsion bar some.

The splsyed mount was designed that way from the factory. I wouldn't worry about it binding, but if you feel better about them being parallel and have the time to modify, why not.
