Friend of mines brother used to be big in the street racing scene (the kind where big bucks swap hands) and ran 5.0 Mustangs. He would use a stock bottom end with a big shot of NAWS till it puked. Said the sbf were so cheap he would rather do it that way than spend money on a stout bottom end.

I use to race fords , usually the saddle the main cap sits in breaks , and it really dont make any difference if its a 302 or 351 block the stock blocks are really limited

When I saw the first one split in half I couldn't believe it. It still ran, guy said it had a water leak he couldn't find.

Pretty durable before you cross the line though.

aluminum rods and a stock block??????

seems like a dart block would have been "good money" spent!

Yeah they are pretty quick, but I think a HUGE reason they are so fast and successful is the Fox body platform (pretty much a drag suspension under them from the factory). Before the Fox cars came out, the SBF was pretty much a dog (save for the Clevelands), then in a flash of light and a puff of smoke they are instant hero motors, and then followed the huge aftermarket. On paper I would venture to say the SBM has more potential that a SBF, but I could be wrong.

It would be interesting to see where the SBM developement would be if Mopar would've come out with a Fox type platform in the early 80's.....Oh well

The 1st one we broke was still running 10.70s , just the oil pressure would go away at wot then come back when you got out of it . Pulled it out and center main caps and the saddles in the block were still held to crank by the studs.

The motor worked to hard to run against a Mopar that it broke in half tring to catch up. It's a 2012 Boat ancor. Or it's road kill. F.O.R.D

Looks like a busted cast crank to me hence the external balance and the aluminum rods were probably an atempt to make the block and crank last a little longer
