I have a 72 duster that will be roughly 3300 lbs with the 440/493. Id like to run 10.50s. I'm starting with a 493 shortblock with a 13cc dish piston. Id like to keep shift points to 6500 and have a 3500 conveter and 4.10 gear. What will it take to get mid 10s?

PM 493 John (John Burdine) on the board. His ran good on motor in his Duster; seems like a similar build. What heads, intake and cam are you going to be running? I think he ran faster than 10.50's on pump gas.

I'd use Victor MW heads and a flat tappet cam for low cost or mild solid roller if money is better.
Victor intake with a 1000HP carb and never look back...

My Duster ran 10.69 with the ported 906 iron heads, six pak intake and carbs,512 C.I. with 9.25 to 1 comp. ratio on the old Oregon pump gas in 2005 through the exhaust with the air cleaner on, no tuning other than on the dyno. It was running out of fuel in high gear, I found that out later with the wide ban I changed the heads to a set of Eddy RPM CNC ported by MCH and it ran 10.49 with no other changes, same same on every other part My car weighs 3450 lbs with me in it and a full(stock tank) tank of pump gas with two batterys in the trunk On the converters, I have ran several different ones starting with a custom built 10 inch from Contintental that foot stalled 2300 RPM and flashed to 4200 to 4400 depending on track and weather, I changed it to a T/A O69J race 9 inch built for a SS/AH Hemi( I had taken it in trade on motor work) and picked up a .10 I then tried a T/A race 8 inch(built for the same SS/AH Hemi car) and picked up .2 and almost 3 MPH in the 1/8 These dang Mopars make me feel foolish sometimes, when it comes to theory anyways All three converters drove really nice on the street IHTHs

Cab,
what cam were you running with that 10.49? I don't know which heads I'm going to run yet. I am thinking about cnc'd stealths or victors. Ill be at 10.6 with stealth and 11 to 1 with victors.
I'm guessing a 255@050 and about .600 lift is on target?

The cam is a comp Cams custom ground solid roller that has .420 lobe lift on the intake side with 260 @.050 duration and .409 lobe lift and 266 degrees at .050 on the exhaust side. I use 1.6 ratio Harland Sharp rockers that checked out to be 1.65 ratio at the retainers, close to .700 net lift with the lash set at .022 hot I bought the cam already ground from a member on here that hadn't use it yet,Benschoff(SP?) racing in Wisconson had it ground, the lobes are BB Chevy lobes It pulls like gang busters way past where I want to shift at I try to shift it before 7600 RPM usually It is ground on a 108 LSA in at 106 or 107 on the intake side, can't remember exactly on that motor now PM if you want the lobe numbers

Cab,
Are you running the same shortblock now just with indy heads instead?
How much difference is the peak power at from the cnc eddie to the indys?
7600

If changing heads I would go with the 440-1 heads. For what you are wanting to do now you really don't need them, but later when you want more HP you won't regret buying them. You already have enough cu in now to run the 440-1's.And with them you can port them later when you are ready for 700+ hp!

should be pretty easy, probably need a cam in the 590-610 range, ported stealth heads would be enough, M1 intake, 950DP and you should be at 10.50 or better.

Indy SR head would work well for you and give you some room to go faster

Same short block but I did switch the heads this year, I put a set of Indy SR with M.W. ports and a 400-3 Indy intake, actauly I ran two different intakes and several different carbs this year, the 400-3 and three different 1050 dominators and a Indy 400-2 intake with a 850 Holley D.P. , 4781-6 The car ran low 10.30 and high 10.20 with the 400-2 and 850 Holley and very low tens and a single 9.993 at 134.3 MPH with one of the Dominators in Oct. at Woodburns last test and tune race. The car use to cross the finish line between 6100 and 6200 RPM with the Eddys and six pak, it crosses the finish line right now at 7000 RPM with 4.10 and 12.5 x29.0x15 Goodyears drag slicks, bias plys The best MPH with the old heads and six pak set up was 128.6 MPH but I had fuel delivery problems at that time

I shift at peak HP 5600 cross the line 6100. I tried shifting higher car slowed down . When the car ran 10.18 the air was -362 DA , I am not sure what I crossed the line at. It felt like someone put another engine in it.

I built a pump gas 493 for my 63 Sport Fury this past year. I used a 440Source kit with the 4.15 crank and dished pistons for pump friendly 10.6 with Indy EZ heads. Solid flat tappet. I have only put 7 passes on it so far with a 10.76 best at just over 3700 lbs. You can see more about it on here http://www.1962to1965mopar.ornocar.com/mmo82008.html if you like. Its the last build under 2011 update. Good luck , Ron

You can easily do that with RPM heads (or well ported iron factory heads)in an A-body.
If you have the std port and your cam isnt too wild of duration , you dont "need" to turn it to 6500. Let the big engine use its torque !

Im at 3300 with driver, 493" , 410 gear, 29.5" tire,4500 converter, shift at 5800 (my combo loves this), been 6.46 so far 1/8 mile which is low 10's 1/4 mile. My junk aint fast but it runs pretty good.
JUST MY OPINION !
