I'm having a problem figuring out what number was stamped on my 68 Charger axle and how it relates to the rear end my car was assigned with. The attached pic shows what looks like it could be 223, 225 or 226 but according to some sources my A4 code 3.23 axle ratio (10" brakes) should have 237 for open or 239 for Sure Grip.

Which presents another problem. Is there a way to know if this axle was open or Sure Grip without a build sheet? The fender tag doesn't tell me. Or does it?

And once I decide what number to paint on it I need to know how tall those numbers are. I believe I have the font pretty well figured out but the size is something I failed to make note of.

BTW, it's quite possible this axle has been changed out at some point. The car was abused and had at least six prior owners that I know of since the late 80s so I'm more interested in what the stamp should say rather than what it did say.

The fender tag will have AX/4 (3.23:1 open) or AX/48 (3.23:1 sure-grip).

GG's "white book" shows 237 (small u-joint 7260) & 239 (large u-joint 7290) respectively with 10" rear drums in a '68 b-body.

It also shows:
227 for a '68 b-body 2.76 S/G w/10" drums
228 for a '66 b-body 3.23 w/11" drums
229 for a '66 b-body 3.23 S/G w/11" drums

those are the only ones in the "22?" range Check width.

Width? Overall width of the axle or what? It's got 10" brakes for sure but of those numbers you listed, 228 looks most like what it could have been stamped with in that photo at the top. My AX code is 4 meaning it would have been open so 237 is what it should be. That sure doesn't look like a 237 in the pic, does it?
