I was planning on building a pretty mild 451 for street use only. I have access to some 400 heavy main blocks. Any reason not to use one of these blocks? Do they sell for much more than a standard 400 block? I hate to use one, if they are in demand for race engines. Give me your opinion. TIA

451's are nasty. My dad built one for a guy that drives it on the street and races it. He drives it to the track and runs 10.70s.

If they are the 230(I believe thats the number) blocks
some guys will pay a good price for them... for a
mild street engine, use any good 400 block

Yes, they are 230 blocks.

The "230" blocks came both ways, thick and standard mains.I have one of the thick ones and two that are not Only some of the first castings made bewteen 07-71 and 10-71, I think, where the cold weather thick main web blocks In other words not all the early "230" castings where the better thick main web ones

Those 4 blocks that were sold were the good ones, thats why I had saved them. One of them that was sand blased did not have the original caps, but I don't know what Brad told you. I'de do the 470 with some real aftermarket heads that flow in the 350cfm range. Steve

Before sinking ANY money in the machining have cylinder bores sonic checked. I've got a standard bore 230 block 7-31-71 casting date. One cylinder is only .080 thick. 4 cylinders are real thin. Dave

Been there done that, put money into a 400 block that was thin, didn't have it sonic tested first It split a cylinder wall on the dyno
