Motor is finally done and now it is time to get some kind of scoop on the car. With the old TR setup I had a bug catcher with a 2" spacer to get it into the good air. Now I have a single dominator on a 440-3 so the top of the carb nearly sets level with the hood.

I plan to mph somewhere in the low 130's so I am thinking of using a cowl but I have some questions.

1) How close to the windshield does it have to be to become functional?
2) Has anyone got a cowl close to the windshield on Duster using a regular hinged hood?
3) How high off the carb does the scoop need to be with a cowl?

If I go forward facing scoop what could I use that would be functional? I read through several posts and there is two facts that seem to contradict each other in regards to forward facing scoops- a) at speeds over 120 the scoop lifts hard on the hood b) because the scoop is below the "good air" line (front of hood to the top of windsheild) it provides no performance gains. It seems that if the scoop is creating that much lift then it is getting a lot of air.

My third option is to make another bug catcher to go on top of the dominator. Again it would be difficult to get it high enough to get into the "good air".

I`ll patiently watch this topic AGAIN as I`m in the same boat..........5" 6-pack scoop sealed to the hood and have mixed emotions about what scoops actually do work.

I am currently running a hemi scoop on my duster at 130 mph it does lift a fair amount but does not look like its going to rip off I do plan on running some aluminum under frt of opening in hopes of keeping it flat when I seal it to carb.A buddy of mine ran a prostock style scoop on his dart and went to a hemi scoop and it slowed and went to a cowl hood and regained some of it but he also chaned some other things but he always said the prostock scoop was the fastest.Ill be watching this also.

In back to back passes my old 6 pack hood was .1 faster than the cowl hood in this pic. I am running an ootb Indy 440-3.

Was the 6-pack sealed?

MPH wise, i equaled my best MPH with the old 6pak scoop with my new cowl scoop on the first day! admittedly i changed the grill assy as well but the engine was unchanged between tests. something to be said about the Aerodynamics of the cowl.

What you have is more in line with what I am considering-how tall is it? How far back does it extend past the back of the hood? I see this as the biggest problem with a cowl on a Duster as there is nearly 8" between the back of the hood and windshield.

It seems like the folks that are seeing good results have them close to the windshield, but I am unsure if they seal them or not. I am also still curious if there is some science to how far above the carbs the scoop is.

Just so we keep this interesting, I have considered taking a short cowl scoop and turning it around so the the opening is very near the front of the hood, as to get the "good air", kinda like the aero style super stock scoops that get the opening low and very near the front of the car.

The cowl scoop is 4" tall and it is probably about 8" from the windshield. My 4.5" K&N air filter fits good underneith it. I am thinking about glassing in the underside of the scoop and sealing off the back leaving the very front part over the rad support grill section open. Then making an air pan to seal the carb to that. The contour of the inside of the hood reminds me of the aero scoop I have.

Since I am adding the scoop to a metal hood I was going to seal the carb to the hood with the idea that the air would be pulled from the back. This is part of my debate on the length, as I was curious if I need to have the scoop (front edge) very close to the carb thus making the carb the end of tunnel, if that makes any sense. It also plays into the height as I am unsure if the smaller the area the better the potential velocity.

Because of my hinged metal hood, I'm also processing how to the get the scoop to the windshield, currently I am thinking of trying to simply attach a fixed extension on the cowl area that would seal to the scoop when the hood is down.

I think you may want to look at Street Roadster scoops. I believe they would look good on a duster. you could tie it in pretty well to the flat hood and most have a closed back. Check out the cad drawing below.

I have a 5" Pro Stock style scoop.The fastest I've gone is 117 and the hood lifts up against 6 hood pins.The scoop is sealed,and I have blocked the scoop opening,(using the cover in the picture) to see if the scoop works and I slowed down a bunch doing so.Now I also use a single 4bbl carb,and according to the Mopar race manuals this scoop shouldn't work,but it works fine for me.
